Marlin 39a with scope - value?

Ihave the opportunity to buy a Marlin 39a in very good condiditon but am puzzled by the scope arrangement on the gun. The owner said his father bought this gun new in 1954, and the scope came with the gun. The scope is not mounted on the receiver. Instead the scope mount requires two screws to be tapped into the barrel and the scope mount fastened to the barrel close to the receiver. Is this an original type of accessory? I can't imagine it is, especially since the receiver is tapped. However, I do remember seeing a couple of other 39a's with this same set up on gun auction sites. I assume such a mount will detract from the gun's value, but how much?

  Marlin 39's are great guns. If the gun is in almost %100 the tapped reciever hurts the value alot. If it's in 'shooter' condition, it doesn't hurt it that much. If you don't want the scope on it, most gunsmiths have filler screws to plug the holes. It doesn't look too bad if it was drilled & tapped right. There are certain models of Marlin 39's that bring more money. Any marlin 39 in good condition will bring $200 plus or minus depending on condition. The drill & tap could hurt the value by about $50.
