st etienne

Can anyone help? My grandfather years ago gave me a 16 guage side by side. Its from st etienne and has the letters pt and the letter e in a diamond. It also has the word or name acier in it. Any help on info would be appreciated

  Your shotgun seems to be of French origin. St. Etienne is a French arms manufacturing center and the PT indicates proof for smokeless powder.

  And "acier" is steel. Thus, fluid steel tubes and made for nitro loads. Quality...Who knows? Same goes for market value.

  I have a Darne, Halifax model in 16 ga. that my father-in-law brought back from Europe as a WW II trophy, "liberated" in St. Etienne. Its a real neat SXS and a breech loader! I am in the process of having it professionally cleaned and checked out. He has one more that has a broken stock that was repaired years ago by a Georgia hillbilly. My plan is to return the one I have, in good condition to my dear father-in-law, and hope he gives me the one with the broken stock. What a neat shotgun. It causes a lot of " What the heck is that?" My gunsmith says they are good quality but each part is not necessarily interchangable with a similar model and broken parts have to be replaced with handmade parts. Everyone needs one of these if they collect shotguns. Best of Luck

  You also might look in books for the name MANUFRANCE. It was a trade name for guns imported from France. I used to own a 16ga. side by side like yours that was marked with the St. Etienne name It was a nice gun but didn't command a very high price. Unless it is engraved and high quality wood it should be looked at as a good shooter and valued for it's connection to your grandfather.
