Avoirdupois weight is 1 dram = 27.34 grains.

Sorry, knifeuser. should have suggested you meant grains, not grams.

ok would like to thank those who replied, maybe i didn't ask this correctly, or just need more help
What would be a good start for a grain measure and a shot measure
for a 10 gage using number 4 shot,
I still need a chart or something to get the proper idea on what grains/drams to use with which type shot.
As I have a grain measure iI would like to use it, but if I need to get a dram measure , well I guess i'll have to get one of those as well.
again thanks for all your help,

Morkster, blackpowder is loaded by volume not weight..

yes to this i would agree
I use 90 grains of powder for my 54 cal w/ball
and its only a volume way of measureing it.
But when it comes to my shotgun I have no idea where to start.
I dont want to blow it or my head off, by using too much powder
and not even a clue on how much shot to use.
This is why I'm asking and looking for some info.
so I supose a measure of 40/40 of each could work , but no idea,
maybe i need more or less of one or the other to get started,
just unsure as I have never used a black powder shot gun before.
    thanks for all the replies.....

You need to get a black powder guide to be on the safe side. The old timers use to saay you could use equal amounts, by VOLUME, of black powder and shot. Now, don't go overboard here. Get a shot measure for 1 to 1 3/4 ounces and go from there. I have a navy arms magnum double that I have not shot for 10 years or more but I always used about 75 grains of powder(2F) and 1 1/8 ounce of shot. This was for most trap and skeet as well as dove and quail. Worked well. I have used 110 grains of 2F and 1 1/2 oz shot for turkeys. Of course, this gun is rated to shoot up to light 8 GA loads. Get a book and be safe. It's not worth taking anyone's two cents when it comes to safety. Good luck and enjoy. I always have loved the smell.

oldfriends, Your post caught my eye! How long does it take to shoot a round of skeet using a ML shotgun? That could really slow down the group! It probably is fun though I just never saw it done! GHD
