22 mag cases getting stuck
I have a 22 magnum rimfire rifle that would get the cases stuck after every shot and had to extract them with a pocket knife. I haven't used this rifle in a long time since it started sticking the cases but would like to. There doesn't seem to be any rust or anything wrong with the chamber and my extractor isn't worn. I was wondering if there was a way I could fix this myself without taking to a gunsmith. Thanks in advance.

I would look for reamer marks in the chamber. If the machining on the chamber is a little coarse, it will grab the cases. However, it sounds to me like you might have a problem with the chamber being slightly oversize and the cases bloating when fired. Take a look at one of the spent casings and see if it bulges at the base above the rim. What type of rifle is it? Might help answer some of the questions. 0 -
If you have not used it for a while,it probably needs a good cleaning.The old oil may have gotten gummy causing the cases to stick. 0 -
Take a jeweler's loupe or real good magnifying glass and inspect the breech end of the barrel at the edge of the chamber... If a rimfire is dry fired on a frequent basis, the firing pin will indent that surface and cause the chamber in that area to reduce in size , causing difficult extraction.. or none at all... Brownell's carries a chamber swaging tool that if used properly, will remove that swelling and return the chamber to normal.... 0 -
I have also had this problem with my 22mag but not after every round. I have a BRNO 22mag and this has happened to me after a few hundred rounds or so. It was a cleaning issue for me. It could be a bad lot aof ammo? maybe if it is every other round or the weapon may be at fault. what rype of 22mag do you have? 0 -
When I saw the header, I figured "Another AMT 22 mag pistol". Being gas operated, the bleed holes just forward of the chamber get clogged up after awhile and the weapon stops functioning. The last manual I saw said nothing about cleaning the holes and I have bought a few "broken guns" for a song. If your rifle is an automatic, check and clean the gas system (If it has one) completely. Bent pipe cleaners seem to work quite well. If something else, everyone else gave good advice. 0 -
ake ta 22 cleaning brush on one section of rod. wrap some fine steel wool around it. Spray the steel wool and chamber with a lubricant ( I like Breakfree)With a drill attached to the rod put the wool in the chamber and polish it out. You may have to do this for a while. Just make sure the steel wool fits snug in the chamber and keep the lube. on it. Should take careof the problem, sounds like you may have some lead or copper or mabye brass caught in the chamber or a very roughchamber to start with 0 -
Try changing ammo. Ihave a Ruger 10/22 mag that would jam about every fourth shot when new. I called it everything but nice, and figured it would have to go back to Ruger.
Idecided to try different ammo first. When I tried Win Premium ammo, viola!, the problem went away. Do you know anyone who would like to buy several half-boxes of 22 WMR? LOL0
