What should I do?
I suppose there is no real answer to this but I'd appreciate opinions.
A few months back I picked up an Argentine 1909. All matching, VG condition, shoots well... only problem is that someone saw fit to cut 5" or so off the barrel. This puts the front sight right above the bayonet lug which means that there isn't sufficient clearence to put on a barrel band on the front which is in fact missing. I detest sporterizing. But the price was too good to pass up. So should I remove the barrel from an all matching gun to replace with a proper military barrel (any leads?) or leave as is? On one hand is an all matching gun, on the other is an all original. Plus the cost of the barrel, rebarreling, etc. would run about what the gun cost me. I paid $100 out the door; still, $200 for an Argie isn't too bad if the new barrel would shoot well.
So what would YOU do?

I came down with ms and lost the use of my right hand (I'm right handed). Would like to hunt with a pistol with my left hand. I've been looking at a used contender or encore. What size cartridge, barrel should I consider? How about a mussel brake? About what price should I be paying? Scope,holoscope or iron sights? I hunt in Western New York and shots would be inside 175 yards. I need help with input. My left hand is strong and I know I have to teach myself to shoot again due to right eye dominance. Any help with this would really be appreciated. Thanks to all for their input! 0 -

and w/ gunsmith approval, sshoot away.

It's already been butchered. If the thing was properly recrowned and it's safe to shoot, then just shoot it. Or bubbaize it. You can't make it any worse than it is. It'd likely cost you more than it's worth to restore. 0 -
Yep, it is not a collectable, all matching numbers or no. That makes it a shooter, so have a gunsmith check it and shoot it. If you want to put the money into sporterizing it, do so, you destroy nothing. Just know that you probably will never realize that cost when selling and assume you are doing it for your own pleasure. 0 -
I wouldn't mind a sporter but I hate to do that to an Argie. I was thinking of picking up a $39 turk and rebarreling, and having it reblued, and dropping into a premade synthetic stock. I actually LIKE military triggers and unbent bolts so if all the smith did was rebarrel and reblue:
$39 Gun
$40-$80 rebarrel depending on work
$75 blue
$154-$184.
If I decide on having the bent bolt add a little more. Not too bad and again, nice thing with sporters is you can pay a little at a time as you have money. I konw there are small and large ring Turks out there; if small I'm going to go with 6.5X55, if large either .308 or 30-06.
Back to the Argie... I have shot it it shoots great. I guess I'll say that IF I see a military take off barrel in person from another 09, I might get it and restore the gun. Otherwise I'll enjoy as is. Whoever cut the barrel did a good job, crowned well, sight installed well (he reused the military sight) and nice appearence. My gut feeling is that the gun probably had excessive muzzle wear and he was cutting it to reach better rifling and then found he couldn't get the barrel band back on and kicked himself.

I think you should git one of em thumbhole stocks for dat dere rifel and maybe mount a laser flashlight combo on it.
Just kidding sounds like you have a nice shooter there.
