Questions concerning federal/state gun laws....!

I was reading the current gun laws for my state (Oregon.) And those for Federal. For Oregon is says you only need to be 18 to buy and possess a shotgun, rifle, and handgun..but nothing for assault rifle(or would it fall under rifle category?) Anyway Fed.law says you need to be 21 to own a handgun,18 for shotgun...So i;m not exactly sure which laws to go by at all. Any help appreciated thanks.

  FHP, Greatings from one of your southern neighbors in California. Federal law does not prohibit persons under 21 from owning a handgun, what it does prohibit is a FFL Dealer from selling a handgun to a person under the age of 21. Your state handgun law is in effect for private party sales but if a 20 year old walks into a gun store he won't be walking out with a pistol! So called assault weapons fall into whatever catagory of firearm they actually are: AR-15 is a rilfe, TEC-9 is a pistol, ect. I understand from reading a few posts that some states are mandating a 21 year minimum age to purchase any firearm classified as an assault weapon- I doubt Oregon has such a regulation.
