Stock for 30-40 Krag

I just got off the phone with my brother, who lives in Northern California. He went to a small gun show yesterday and bought a Krag which has had its stock "sporterized". He now needs to buy a replacement stock (and front barrel band) to restore the rifle to its former glory. Does anyone know who might have these items for sale? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I honestly hope I got the rifle at a fair price. There are far more sporterized Krags out there than original military rifles and most have had their stocks ruined. My uncle has a beautiful Krag which his father-in- law sporterized years ago by chopping up the original excellent condition stock- the cartouche is there and as strong as I've ever seen- but the stock has been butchered and can never be restored!
  
  Finding a correct and original Krag stock today will be difficult and EXPENSIVE! There are very few original Krag stocks on the loose and the folks who do have them know those pieces of lumber are the key to restoring a Krag into a pricey collectors rifle. As a result, they want TOP dollar and it is often not all that much more expensive to purchase an entire correct Krag Rifle in fair condition than to purchase a correct and excellent condition stock outright. Expect to spend months searching gun shows and I'd say a good condition Krag stock with proper markings in decent shape would fetch $300 to $500- depending on exactly which Krag Rifle it was intended to fit. Excellent condition stocks bring much more. I've seen fairly well beat up stocks bring $150 to $200, but they looked awful and I doubt you'd want one in that condition. There are some commercial firms who make modern copies of military rifle stocks and that would be a much cheaper option if you were just trying to make the rifle "look" correct rather than try to restore it.

  Your best bet would be to try E-Bay,search the word KRAG, their is usually alot of krag things for sale there, and every once in awhile there will be a stock, but be prepared to break out the checkbook and part with alot of money, they do not come cheap, good luck...

  Ebay is a great place to start looking. I have an original 1899 carbine and a full length 1898. Whenever I need something, I start there first.

  Mark has pretty much nailed it. If you can find one they are nearly the full cost of an original rifle & a new reproduction will also be very expensive. Even the very beaten up ones will be over a hundred dollars.

  If you find yourself in the position of wanting to restore your Krag to its original appearance, but unwilling to part with the money for an original stock, I belive that both Boyd's and Great American Gunstock Co. make replacements.

  Thanks to all for your replies. Mark--my brother called again today and said the blue on the barrel was 95% and the receiver was about 75% with an almost perfect bore. The only "sporterizing" is someone removed the barrel band and cut off the stock at the forend. BTW, he paid $90.00, so I think he is OK.
