Spalling is is a surface failure of a hard metal. An example is what happens in a ball bearing when it starts to fail from heat or lack of lubrication. Flakes of metal break out of the raceways and the bearing then grinds itself up. 0 -

I'm a little late getting here but I see you got a clear explanation. Thats exactly what happened. Little chunks and slivers of metal were popping off the crown with each shot. Not only did accuracy deteriorate but I feared the barrel might split with further firing. Mind you this was with my handloads which are very conservative. but what I was really trying to indicate was the response I received from N.E.F.- Superb!! This is the way honorable Americans should interact.I have received the same from Leupold, Lee Precision and Midway. nb
