1911 Identification
I was just wondering how a person could go about identifying this pistol?

Looks like a parts gun. My guess is a Remington Rand slide on an Essex frame judging from the serations on the slide and the serial number location on the frame.
Measure twice, cut once.

Don't have a clue to what it is? But when I see that "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" business in the remarks, red flags start flying for me! Personally, I would run to the nearest exit without looking back rather then geting involved in a deal like that. 0 -

I see that it has Colt grips but I don't think that there were any Colts produced in the 400,000C serial number range. It seems like 330,000C was the end and then in 1970 they began a new numbering system starting with 70G and the serial number. I have a feeling that this fellow knows more about the pistol than he is letting on.

Where have you been Paul? We needed a good Colt man! Can you ID this pistol? Were there Colt Government Models in the over 400,000C serial number range? I am curious about this gun now myself and I don't even like 1911's.

I'm getting out my 10 foot pole.
Strange, but based upon the seller's description, he knows little about the gun. On the other hand, he knows enough to decide that it's worth an unknown amount well over $500! With such a scant description, bad photos, and no returns, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.
In any case, I'm curious as to whether any FFL would even handle such a gun. While removing the manufacturers name, city & state, & caliber would not be illegal, there's still the question of completing the bound-book and Form 4473 entry "manufacturer". What would the dealer show: NONE? OBLITERATED? UNKNOWN? Wouldn't this pique the interest of the fellows with the bulges in the cheap suits?

To be honest guys, I wasn't looking seriously at it. I was just trying to gain knowledge on the subject. I guess I should have said that the first time. I guess on this one, knowledge comes from experience.

That serial # doesn't compute as a Colt.
Even if Colt numbers ran that high, it would be C409XXX not 409XXX-C.....and if that's a Colt blue job, I'll eat it without mustard or relish.0
