H&R M16A1
I have posted about this gun before. It is a H&R M16. Marked "Property of U S Government" serial number, #20089xx, it fits into the beginning of the contract, and the end of the amnesty program. It is registered and transferable, so it must have been registered during that time. Is there anyway to trace when it was registered?
This gun is marked as a M16A1, cal 5.56mm, it has the raised rail around the magazine release, and is small take down pin. It is black and appears to be painted. It has a colapsible stock but that's easy to change, I really would like to find a H&R upper for it, but I haven't be able to as of yet. Partly due to I'm not quite sure what to look for.
Did H&R make complete guns, or just parts? Do you know of any books that list the different manufactures for the M16's and assorted uppers or other parts. I have come across different casting letters on uppers, but I don't know what H&R would be.
I tried searching the internet for more information on the amnesty program, but came up blank, any sugestions where to look.
Thanks for all you help and sharing you knowledge.
Any help in locating a H&R uppper would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

Hello Mark. I remember your post from a couple of months back and I am sorry to learn that you still have such little information about your M16. H&R made complete rifles and I believe I gave you the start of their production and contract dates in the previous post. I can offer no more information on that. As to finding out about your rifles amnesty registration; this is nearly impossible. Here is the reason: When the amnesty form was filed back in late 1968 your rifles original owner paid a $200 National Firearms Tax to the ATTU (as the BATF was then known) and received his NFA Tax Stamp. This information is now priveledged tax imformation- the same as his income tax returns- and cannot be realesed to ANYONE without the proper court orders.
Mark, someone can't just ask for your 1968 1040 and then take a look at the information it contains- not for any reason- and the NFA Tax Forms are treated the same way by law. The ONLY way you can EVER see this ammnesty form is for the original owner to have died and you, as the executor of his estate, would be allowed to see it in order to prove it was indeed registered- that is it period. Don't even bother to write the BATF about this because they can't tell you a thing-anyone there who did would be in jail the next day- it is illegal to provide any of that information to anyone other than the original owner or his estate if he died. I wish I could be of more help.
