Pro & con stainless---blue barrell

  Stainless resists rust better, and polishes up easier than blue. I haven't ever heard any real evidence that there is any difference in performance. Don't forget about the new carbon-fiber barrels too. They are a very light-weight yet rigid replacement for many rifles.

  Not an expert, but for me, it depends on the main function of the gun. I would not take a mirror into the fields or woods for hunting, so I would not want SS for that. Wouldn't want a shiny bright camera out there either.
  For other things, SS is easier to maintain and generally more expensive. It does seem to hold its' re-sale, so you get your money back in the end.

  Spiny is right about bright guns... I have a stainless/sythetic Ruger Red Label over-under and I bought it for waterfowl hunting, but without camo tape or Kane Gun Chaps, it sticks out like a sore thumb. It is still easy to cover up and I still recommend stainless for everything that they make it in.

  I read numerous times that stainless is a better material for high- volume, high velocity rifle calibers. That the stainless (guess it depends on the alloy used also) resists throat erosion better.
  
  Why Winchester produced some Mod. 70 in 220 Swift with stainless barrels.

  you have to be careful with stainless barrels! stainless scratches much easier than chrome moly barrels. i know this sounds weird since SS is so hard. you can ruin a SS barrel with a cleaning rod ifn it's not a one piece, coated rod like a dewey brand. i just built a 6mm with a douglas ss barrel. instructions came with it from douglas about proper cleaning. perhaps you might contact douglas or other barrel maker to ask about it. ALSO...stainless guns will rust if not cared for properly.

  stainless has a greater lubricity than carbon steel. It lasts longer, and resists throat erosion better. That is why all match grade benchrest barrels are stainless. They clean up easier and last longer,...period.

  I agree with all the above statements.One in particular,they do resale a little higher.But I also am very fond of a deep blue finish.

  I have hunted the last 5 years with a stainless muzzleloader and the deer have not complained yet but they were dead.[:D]
