Barrels rate of twist

I have a Weatherby special varmint mark v .223 rem. It has a 22in #3 contour Krieger Criterion hand lapped barrel with 11 degrees concave target crown and a 1 in 12 twist rate. What bullet weight is going to be more accurate with that twist rate?

  52gr-62 or 69gr. Go to the Shillen barrel website and it gives a suggested twist rate for all bullet weights in most calibers.

  your twist of 1 in 12 is best for weights up to 55gr.
  you will find that out to 200yds weights up to 62/63gr will work good.
  over 200yds any bullet weight over 55gr will rapidly loose accuracy.

  Thanks for input. I've been breaking in the barrel with 55gr bullets but it does not seem to be very accurate with them. I don't know if its the gun or scope. (it couldn't be the shooter lol). I thought maybe I needed to go heaver. Now I know better. Thanks.

  try the hornady 40gr and 50gr v-max. they are excellent in my 220.

  there is a reason that barrel makers decided long ago that 55gr .224 bullets and less were most accurate in a 14" twist. for the faster twist you need heavier bullets, 60 gr and up for best performance. the 69 gr is a usual good performer with the 12" twist. i suggest you acquire ackleys books on this subject as he always cut thru the bull****.

  224CF
  8" heavier than 70gr
  9" for up to 70gr
  12" fo up to 63gr
  14" for up to 55gr
  15" for up to 55gr driven 4100fps or more
