EA-15 B.F.I. MAINE, USA SERIAL #G1081, CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT MAKE THIS THING IS? THANKS FML LUCKM7@AOL.COM

  I have an EA-15, and it was made by Eagle arms. Eagle Arms later joined ranks with, and became a division of Armalite.
  I have never heard of Essential Arms, maybe it is a new company?

  Essential Arms made/sold lower receivers only. They are defunct. They went under in March of 1996.

  It's Eagle Arms, a division of Armalite.
  Essential Arms made the J-15. Out of business since 93.

  Be careful guys. If a retail customer or dealer had a lower receiver on hand that was manufactured before the law was signed, but you didn't have all the parts on hand to assemble it into a complete rifle, you could not now assemble it into a legal, Pre-ban rifle. If you had all the parts on hand before the bill was signed into law, you could still assemble it into a legal, Pre-ban configuration. If someone comes to you with a box full of parts, and a NEW preban lower reciever, and wants you to assemble it into a rifle, you had better see the invoices for the parts so you can verify that they were all purchased before September 13, 1994. Without invoices to prove when the parts were purchased, it would not be legal to assemble it into a Pre-ban rifle.

  Tall 1: I respectfully disagree. Merely having a box of parts on hand when the Crime Bill went into effect in 1994 is not enough. The lower receiver had to be manufactured into an "assault weapon" on that date or the lower lost its pre-ban status. Depending on which ATF opinion you're willing to hang your hat on (and there are a few on this topic, see the legal forum at ar15.com for a lively discussion of them), this means either a complete rifle, or the lower with at least two "evil features," i.e., the pistol grip and collapsible stock.
  
  Nor does the fact that the lower may arrive in a box with all parts but no invoices mean anything. Given that the date of original manufacture of the AW is the critical piece of information, it makes no difference how new or old the parts are for a current rebuild. If my pre-ban lower qualified as an AW on the critical date, then I can rebuild it today with freshly minted pre-ban parts and still be in full compliance with the law.
  
  Lastly, though I would NEVER recommend or condone the manufacture of an illegal AW (I'm dead serious here, it's a MAJOR federal offense), the ATF and your local U.S. Attorney are going to have a tough time proving a negative, i.e., that your lower, which bears a pre-ban serial number, was NOT made into an AW on the critical date. If you say it was, how do they prove it wasn't? If you're not the original owner of the lower, then who was it registered to on the critical date? ATF is going to have some investigating to do, and they won't even begin doing it unless there's a really good reason to start. (To my knowledge, there have been exactly 3 prosecutions for Section 922 AW violations in the 9 years the law has been on the books.) It's a practical question with a legally significant answer.
  
  As for fml's question, I'm stuck. B.F.I. stands for "Bushmaster Firearms, Inc." out of Windham, Maine. EA-15, however, is an Eagle Arms model designation (which I know because I just bought a LNIB pre-ban EA-15 this week -- brag, brag[:p]). Eagle Arms made rifles and AR parts in only two locations: Coal Valley and Geneseo, IL. (If you count Armalite and go WAY back in the day, toss in Costa Mesa, CA.) I can only assume that the data fml provides is from both the upper and lower, but Bushmaster lowers have an "LO" prefix, not a "G" prefix. Eagle Arms lowers don't have a "G" prefix either, but used "US" and "USA" instead. If the "BFI" is the prefix, then it's a post-ban Bushmaster. I have no idea where the "G" comes in at all.
  
  Like I said, I'm stuck. Maybe fml can post a picture so we can see the little monster, and maybe we can do better.

  Olympic used to use the EA prefix too if I remember correctly. As far as BFI that is Bushmaster or subsidiary. Probably an Oly.
