A different kind of Cetme question....
Heres a question for any of the Cetme owners/users out there- Would you trust the qaulity of your guns in particular enough to use it in defense of your life? I pondered getting one becuase ive always wanted a .308 battle rifle but the expense has been the limiting factor. If they are reliable enough to trust them for protection i think i may invest in one, but if not im not sure maybe ill save a while longer...any input is appreciated.

Nearly every person I have spoken to who owns a "CETME" and in most of the posts you read here on GB, people describe the rifle as needing work or a bit of tinkering right after purchase. This does not speak highly of the reliablity- although it can be made to work well with some TLC. Price seems to be the biggest selling point for these rifles and most folks see $300 and can't resist. I can't blame them if they want a plinker- it would be an excellent choice for that.
Over 25 years ago I owned a real CETME, this rifle was imported by Mars Equipment and sold by Gold Rush Gun Shop (Benet Arms) in San Francisco (there a NO gun shops in San Francisco any more). This was a top quality rifle and sold for around $300 back then- a small fortune for me at that time. The fit and finish were outstanding and the walnut stock was a fine piece of wood that would have served just a nicely on an AYA shotgun as on an assault rifle. I would have taken this rifle anywhere and counted on it to save my life- it was easily as good as the HK-41 I owned (the model designation before the 91) back then and imported by Santa Fe Arms.
These new "CETME" rifles are simply cloned receivers adapted to accept parts kits from surplus Spanish rifles. The internals are then modified to prevent using the select fire components and then they are refinished. Nearly everyone looks different and the quality of the parts kit used to build the rifle can vary quite a bit- you might get a rifle assembled on an excellent kit...or you might not get a good kit- it is the luck of the draw. These rifles look nothing like the CETME that I knew from way back. I would have trust in an HK rifle built by a licensed factory like Hellenic Arms in Greece (Springfield Armory) or FMP in Portugal (InterOrd). These rifles were built on HK factory machinery using HK techs to set everything up- they work right out of the box- I know because I own one and it works as well as my HK-91. The "CETME's" available today are not built with factory assistance of any kind and I would not have faith (life or death) in a rifle built from reverse engineering. These are only my opinions and I am sure others feel much differently about their "CETME's".

I dont know about the Spanish Cetme rifle, but I own a Century Arms G3 and it has been flawless. No jams what so ever, accuracy is 1 inch at 100 yards with an H&K scope mounts. I also own a Federal Ordnance G3 and it is exceptional. If you were to drop me off on foreign ground with either of these rifles, I would not be afraid for my life. I trust my guns. But I know them, they are easily field cleaned. I am sure there is junk out there, but mine work just Dandy. 0 -
Save up $900 and get yourself a DSA FN FAL. Otherwise get the Cetme. But please test it on the range before you swear by it.

It seems to me people have found the G3 rifles to be better buys than the Cetmes around here. They cost about 100-150 more but they seem to all be in really nice condition. One other thing, can one of the Century or Federal G3 (not Cetme) copies accept parts from h&k rifles, like forearms, butstock, scope mounts, grips etc.?0 -
I just picked up a century arms from J & G sales up in Prescot AZ for 289.00 last weekend. They have a 30 day return policy and century has a 1 year warranty, if you can't decide if theres a problem right away atleast you have that year to shoot the crap out of it. I think if it is going to goof up it will do it preatty quick. every one says clean it very good, which I did complete field strip. and shoot about 3 to 400 rounds through it, I live in Arizona and rode up with my buddy so I got to hand pick mine and they are really nice. I just wanted something to play with in 308 but, didn't want to drop a grand and half on a m1a.
