difference between 7.62x39 and 7.62x54
Can someone tell me the differences in the two rounds?

While both use the same nominal size bullet* (7.62mm) the case length is different 39mm vs 54mm.
The x54mm case also has a rim (thats what the R stands for in it's name 7.65x54R) while the x39 case is a rimless design.
The x39 is a intermeadate power cartridge used in the AK47 and SKS, the x54 is a full power rifle and machine gun cartridge.
The x39 is normaly loaded with bullets in the 125gr range, while the x54 normaly gets bullets in the 165gr range.
The x39 is approx equil to the 30-30Win (powerwise) while the x54 is a 30-06 class cartridge.
* the x39 bullet is spec.ed at .311 actual dia while the x54 is spec.ed at .308 actual dia.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Both were developed in Russia. The 7.62x54R mm dates from 1891 and was primarily used in the Mosin Nagant Bolt Action Rifle. It is a rimmed cartridge, and approximates our .30-06 in ballistics. The 7.62x39mm dates from W.W.II and is shorter, rimless, was designed for use in semi and full auto rifles such as the SKS and AK-47, and approximates the .30-30 in power. Both use a bullet with a nominal diameter of .311, but the 7.62x39mm uses a bullet of less grain weight. 0 -
The 308Win (7.62x51) was designed to nearly duplicate the 30-06 (7.62x63) balistics in a shorter package. For military purposes there in the same class.
Other cartriges in this class are the 7.62x54R, 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser), 303 British, 7.7x58 (7.7 Arasaka, 7.7Jap) 8x56R, etc. I'm refering to there origional military loadings, not the emasculated offerings the "big 3" American ammo manfactures load.
