AR15 question?????
I have seen recent advertisements of AR15 barreled uppers that are properly headspaced. Can someone explain the headspace proceedure on these? I am in the dark here. We can swap uppers out without doing anything without problems. Thanks to all replies.

Complete "UPPERS" if supplied complete with bolt are factory assembled and tested. They are "adjusted" in every way so they are within specifications and "headspacing" is done. Simply putting one of these onto your lower is easy.......attach the pin and close it! The only thing that happens is now the upper and lower "mesh" together and actuating the bolt "cocks" the hammer, etc. Not necessary to make any adjustments here are the hammer swings and hits the firing pin...!
If you were to completely assemble a full upper with all parts, from "scratch," then you would have to insure all clearance dimensions, etc., were maintained within proper specifications.
Hopefully this is what you are asking about. This is my interpretation of your question.......but I could be wrong. I think you are asking if it is necessary to "adjust the headspace etc., if you change Uppers." The answer, if a new Factory Upper would be NO! If you assembled the Upper yourself, then it would probably be YES! If you got the Upper from someone else in Used condition, then I would recommend it be checked by someone that could do so competently.
However, if you want to have the procedure for "headspacing" an AR-15 explained to you in a step by step method.....I will have to bow to someone else with more gunsmithing experience. I am probably not competent enough to do that. Hope I helped a little.

I could be wrong but I believe headspacing means correcting the gap between the bolt face and the chamber. I believe this can be different with every upper. So buying a bolt assembly and a upper separately could be dangerous if this precedure isn't done.

With few exceptions, bare barrels are sold with the extension and gas block/front sight assembly. The extension is actually a receiver because it contains the locking lugs that the bolt lugs engage. The assembler of the barrel extension has done the headspacing which involves only the barrel and barrel extension, not the upper and lower receivers. Headspace of any commercially assembled barrel should be correct for use with any standard bolt. You can, with the help of an upper receiver action block and an armorers'wrench, install any AR barrel into any upper receiver and expect it to be properly headspaced with any standard bolt. The upper to lower receiver mounting hole dimensions are so carefully controlled that with the exception of small hole Colt receivers most any brand upper will fit on any lower receiver. 0
