Remington's key safeties
Can the new remington keyed safety systems be replaced by their older counterparts? Would this be legal? So far, I don't think these are required, but are probably attempts to avoid litigation (can we blame them)?

I Don't know about legal, I am thinking about replacing mine with one of them with the Winchester safty, Kind of spendy. 0 -
If there were ever an accident with the firearm, and was revealed you had disenabled one of the safety mechanisims--no matter if that safety mechanisim had anything to do with the accident or not--legally, you would be in deep s***.
That is my legal opinion...and worth about what you paid for it.

Brownells sells the replacement bolt shroud without the key in it. That changes nothing, but the fact that there is no place to put the key in.

Bambi, I have a new 1187 with that feature and I just leave it unlocked. Is there a problem with doing so?

I have a VSSF in .220. I just leave it off safety all the time.. I agree that it is a cosmetic flaw, but not worth spending any extra money on it. How does the shroud from Brownell's match the current finish.??

Yeah, I guess I could just leave it unlocked... I am so detailed oriented that sometimes I forget the obvious (keys) [:)] I had to break into my own gun case one time to keep from ruining a hunt because the keys were 400 miles away.
I think gun safety is in the hands of the owner and user, not some little device they force onto us. I really don't blame Remington, I know they are just trying to avoid more anti-gun litigation...
I will look into the brownells setup.

I just bought a new Remington 870 and it was the first time I ever saw one of the "key safetys." It sure doesn't bother me because I will never lock it and I don't see how it can lock itself.
For what this is worth: when I was dealing in guns (and I bought, traded and sold a lot of guns), I would never take a used gun in trade, or buy one, that had an altered safety. Or if I did, I discounted it enough to have it restored to original before being passed on to a buyer. And every other dealer I knew followed the same practice. The liabilities were too great.
I feel like I may be starting to sound like your mother in trying to talk you out of tampering with the safety. But I just hope you understand the seriousness of what you are about to do.

Duely noted rafter... Of course I'd keep the originals if I did anything anyway.
I'll probably just look for prior models without them if possible that way I don't have to even open that can of worms...

mjott, the brownells bolt shrouds match the finish closely. They are aluminum, so they are lighter. This does absolutely nothing to the safety mechanism. If you replace the bolt shroud, the safety is still there, all it is is a piece of aluminum which replaces the shroud with the hole in it for the key. NO alterations are made to the operation of the rifle,...it's the same as if you leave it unlocked, you just can't see the key-hole.
However, my gunsmith and several seriuos shooters I know, have built on the new 700 actions and say there is no difference in the accuracy, it's simply a cosmetic issue.
