collectors item stock repair

Is there a way to repair a collectors item stock that has a 1 inch by 1 inch chip in it, and not ruin the value of the rifle?

It depends.

If you are talking about a Winchester commemorative, then no, it can't be repaired --- it's just a shooter now.

If you are talking about an arsenal rebuilt US M1903, stocks were routinely repaired by splicing in pieces of wood; an expert repair probably woundn't hurt the value.

On the other hand, if you have an all-original gas trap US M1 rifle, most problems are best left alone.

Yes I have done quite a lot of it. Just this week I did such a repair on a $2500 Hoffman rifle. Wood chips can be repaired by inletting an inlay of wood or by making a paste of clear epoxy glue mixed with sawdust of the right color to make a paste that becomes the filler. Fixing the chip is the easy part and as the others have said, if it looks like a repair it affects the collector value. My specialty is concealing the repair so it is not obvious. I do what in effect is a paint job and try to make them un-detectable but all I can guarantee is not to be conspicuous. Most do come out un-detectable by the naked eye. All I can tell you about how to do it is try and try again until you develop your own skill. Try on scrap rather than a fine gun.
