I Need A Mauser Expert
If you are an expert on the Mauser K98, I need your help. I came into possession of a bnz. 4 with all matching serial numbers. Here is the problem, the serial number is above the range listed for a bnz 4. The range is 744 to 4917q and my serial number is 5757.
Any thoughts on this situation would be appreciated.

NJ, you have no problem at all. Your serial number simply lacks the letter suffix. All that means is that your rifle was one of the first 9999 produced. At that point the serial number range added an "a" suffix (0001a) and another 9999 were produced. Then they moved to 0001b and so on up until the end with suffix letter "q". This gives you and idea of just how many thousands of these were produced- each letter ment another 10,000 rifles! If I recall your rifle, which was made by Steyr had, an ending serial number at 4917p and not the "q" you mentioned. A small detail to be sure, but could you site your source on this for me?

The source for my info on the serial number is Peter Kuck, who edited a article in a newsletter I read.
Can you send me your email addy or a phone number where I could reach you? BTW the serial number does have a letter suffix.
Thanks........
