Winchester Pump .410 - Looking for info. help

Hi there!

I just found this site, and thought I'd ask about a gun for my Dad..

When I was a kid, he used to let me use a Winchester pump .410, that he since has told me he bought "used" in the mid 50s near Waucaunda, IL - he thinks it was quite a bit older. We were together this past weekend looking at his shotguns (he's also got a killer Browning 20 Superposed Grade I 'Lightening' with a 1972 serial # - and an old Belgium Auto 5, 'Sweet 16' that I also used to carry quite a bit as a kid) which are all in as beautiful shape as I remembered 25 years ago - talk about festidious!!

..anyway this Winchester pump is really a gem, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some specifics? the only numbers I was able to pick off (that looked to me like serial #s) was two matching '56141' on the barrel and right under, were it meets the breach (sp?)...

Any help is greatly appreciated! This gun brings back a lot of great memories for me..

    Hello Jim and welcome to GB. The only Winchester .410 pump that I am aware of that fits your time line is the Model 42- it looks quite a bit like a baby Model 12. These were introduced in the early 1930's and dropped from the line in around 1963 with nearly 170,000 made. Your serial number indicates a production date of around 1947- although I am not an expert in this field and someone else may be able to pin it down exactly.

    There were a lot of speical order features available for these, along with a standard, skeet, trap grades and a couple of other higher grades which are selodm seen. There is quite a bit of collector interest in this model and one in the condition ("gem") which you describe would fetch $1000- easily even more if your dad's Model 42 in really an outstanding example with a few extra features (a vent rib would vastly increase the value, a solid rib some what less) and the box and papers to go with it.

    Don't let this one get away from you and NO MORE trips to the field with this little guy, he goes back to the gun safe to relax and take it easy for the rest of his days. These types of firearms will only continue to rise in value- if you leave them alone and keep them in top condition. I hope this information helps you.

    Definately solid rib, and unfortunately, no box OR papers..

    But this was my gun of choice, even with the 16 - and my Nikko 12 over-under at the ready! There was something about that gun (hasn't been used since about '80 or so) that really did it for me. And ya know something - I never once wished for more 'fire power'... [:)]


    If I sound self-concious, it's because of the other guys' ribbing me with...."nice girly gun"....[:(!]

    My Father wants to give my brother and I the guns we used to use as kids - that would include the Winchester 42 .410, and an over-under 'Nikko' 12 that my Dad called a "screaming eagle" (don't know if this is accurate - or just 'cause it's adorned with two gold eagles.. which appear to be screaming....[:p]). My brother Mike used a 12 side by side, branded SKB I believe. I had quite honestly forgoten about the super guns the old man kept!

    (....oh, and the old guy is keeping the Superposed and the Auto 5..[;)] )
