another remington lemon

OK... I know the model 700 is a huge seller and people swear by it but I guess i've just had bad luck with remington. The current troublemaker is a 300 win mag model 700 bought new in 1990's. (or late 80's) It takes a professional arm-wrestler to operate the bolt. The bolt is sticky but operates when empty. Loaded, and more so after firing, it resists movement in all directions. I don't know if it's been hot loaded, but I don't think so. I think the guy only used factory ammo, unless he got some hot loads from somebody else. i don't have any info on how the cases look after firing. Any advice?

  Unless it functioned as this from the day it left the fatory, I don't think I would blame Remington just yet. I would be more inclined to
  find fault with "operator error"., i.e. poor or no maintanance, or
  improper loads.

  I seen one that was hard to close---the screws holding the scope base were to deep and rubbing bolt causing it to be rough.Guys please do not laugh,I seen it with my own eyes.It was not my gun.BTW

  4wheeler, the problem you described would be the fault of the scope base manufacturer.

  steve, Not necesarily the fault of the scope manufacturer! Possibly the fault of the base installer using the wrong screws on the wrong end! To address the original topic, I doubt that Remington let one out of the factory really bad!! Something else caused the problem.GHD

  I've seen this happen before with the scope mounts. Just as stated before wrong screw in the wrong hole. This would be a easy one to check first before getting carried away with things.

  Agreed it could be the scope base installer if their is a short and long screw. But not the fault of the rifle.

  The long scope screws seems like a good call. But you might look at a rough chamber too. That would explain the real problem of trying to operate the bolt after shooting "hot" loads. My 2 cents anyway, GOOD LUCK ...Mark

  also check the front trigger guarg screw, same problem possible as the long scope mount screws.

  If it was the scope mount screws being to long wouldn't that affect the closing of the bolt rather it was loaded or empty?I think JGray said it would function ok when it was empty.I would get it to a smitty and get the headspace checked.Just a guess...

  it sounds more like bad chamber size or the barrel is a little to small. and that makes the shell stick when you close the bolt

  If it isn't screws projecting into the path of bolt locking lugs, it's a rough or bulged(ringed)chamber.
