L1A1 post ban, what can I do?

I own an L1A1 postban model with thumbhole stock, no flash hider etc. I have heard that with the addition of a certin amount of USA built parts I can LEGALLY modify my pre ban model. What can I do?

  Hello Steve, as you are probably aware the 1989 Bush Ban (Pappa Bush)
  ended the importation of militray style firearms such as the FN FAL. Any firearm in that configuration (pistol grip) could no longer be imported. The way around this was the "thumbhole stock" and this worked up until Clinton pulled the plug on further importation of nearly everything that looked remotely war like (and could accept a hi cap magazine) in April, 1998.
  
  Before that some enterprising people took a look at the law and found that it was illegal to assemble a banned imported assault rifle from imported parts- everyone knew this but they saw a twist. It seems that under the law USC 922(r) these imported rifles are broken down into 20 differnt components: Frames, barrels, barrel extentions, trunnions, muzzel attachments, bolts, bolt carriers, operating rods, gas pistons, trigger housings, triggers, hammers, sears, disconectors, buttstocks, pistol grips, hand gaurds, magazine bodies, followers, and floor plates. You are in violation of the law if you assemble a firearm in a banned configuration that has more than 10 (TEN) of those parts...just ten.
  
  Here is what you need to do: Tear down your L1A1 to the point where you have the 20 parts I mentioned laying in front of you. Now, pick any 10 of those parts and replace them with parts made here in the good old USA. Do that and you are on solid ground. HINT: It is a LOT easier (and cheaper) to replace a buttstock, hand gaurd, and magazine body, follower and floor plate with USA pieces than to replace the barrel, bolt, or receiver. There are compnaies out there that will sell you a complete USA compliance kit with enough parts to do the job correctly and legally. Check out Shotgun News or another trade publication to find them. I hope this answers your question. And remember, you still CANNOT add a flash hidder or bayonet lug as those are banned under the 1994 Crime Bill which is a totally seperate nightmare!
