Western Field rifles?

Does anyone have info on the Western Field high-powered rifles?

  Westernfield came from many sources. One was a firm that converted military K-98 actions, rebarreled etc. I saw some that came from a firm called " Santa Barbara" arms co in california. Also I do think Marlin made some for their lever action line and savage made some cheaper bolt actions that came in .30-30 and .222 Magnum. The .22's under that name were from various sources as well. Not bad guns for the money in their day.

  The high powered bolt action rifles from back in the 60's & 70's were made by Mossberg. I don't know about any newer models.

  Western Field was a trademark of rifles sold by Montgomery Ward....most of their rifles were made by Mossberg or Savage.
  
  If you can tell us the Western Field model number, we can probably nail down the manufacturer and manufacturers model number.

  Some Westernfield bolt actions were actually made by Heym in Germany, on small ring 98 actions. Some even have butterknife handles and lever floorplates. Look for the letters EHM on the barrel, that is German manufacturer's code for Heym.

  My father bought me a western field .22 lever action on my 16th birthday. It was bought at Montgomery Ward in the late 1960`s.

  Alaskaman, as indicated Westernfield rifles were sold through Montgomery Ward and made under contract by a variety of manufacturers, principally Mossberg. There are crossoverlists in the Blue Book and at Gun Parts Corps web site to allow you to go from your WF model # to the manufacturers model #. Generally speaking, these kinds of rifles/shotguns sold by Wards, Sears, Western Auto etc. do not command near the price of the underlying model with the manufactureres name. There is little if any collector market and they are sold as shooters only. There does seem to be a very small collectors market developing for Sears rifles.

  Thanks for the responses! I own a Mossberg 800, the Western Field rifles must be pretty much the same thing. My 800 isn't real fancy but is a great shooter for the amount I paid for it, seems to shoot just as good as my Winchester 70 or Ruger 77. Great to see this info about the companies that made guns for contractors. Thanks again!

  I have 2 Westernfield firearms. One is a lever action 22 called the Palomino that was made by Mossburg the other was given to me by my father, its a slide action 12 ga. shotgun with raised rib and stamped Browning Patent. Shooting Times magazine said the gun was definitely made by Browning and though Westernfield firearms have no collector value, it would be a valuable shooter. That part is true. Best grouse gun I ever had. nb

  I have a Western Field 12ga I bought at an auction a couple years ago. I recognized it as a Mossberg from across the room. I got it very cheap :^). Added an 18 1/2 inch barrel. Good bedroom gun.
