rifle pistol calibers
I hunt with hi-power rifles for deer hunting out in the open.
But I have often wondered, what pistol caliber reaches out further.
I am wondering does a 44 mag with a 16inch barrel, or a 357 magnum, with a 24inch barrel go further? I have shot at 150 yards with these calibers with success. Does the barrel length have any effect on range in pistol calibers?

You have already stretched those calibers out past what most people would shoot,at least the shooters I know where I live. The only pistols I hunt with are Encore,ie 308 and 223.Bob. 0 -
I would agree. I have owned three 357 and two 44 rifles. When I chronyed them I was impressed. The extra bbl length makes a big differance in MV. The 125 gr 357 in a 4 in was about 1250, in the 16 in Marlin it was almost 2100 fps.
BUT I would not recommend the 357 for deer, UNLESS YOU ARE HUNTING VERY SMALL DEER AND LESS THAN 100 YDS, THEN USE 158 OR 180 GR LOADS.
I know that I have heard of people taking deer with the 357 in both hand guns and long guns. IF YOU HAVE THE SELF CONTROL TO PICK YOUR SHOTS WISELY ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
The 357 rifle is a GREAT self defence and pest choise though.
Self defence is an ablsolute and natural right. Keep your powder dry! J. Rau, Alaska0
