Reloading question....case stuck in resizing die

OK guys I'll fess up....I didn't put any case lubricant on some cases I was reloading. Second case I deprimed and resized just wedged itself in my progressive reloaders die. I mean when I went on the down stroke the brass at the base pealed back and left the casing buried in the die. Any suggestions how to pull the case. Color me dumb on this one it was 1130 pm and my son wanted to see the sequence for reloading....rather than telling him to wait until morning I went ahead and this is the result...dumb dumb dumb. P.S.I've reloaded thousands and thousands of round and never had this happen before. Beach

Beach,

I always drill through the primer hole and tap it with a 1/4-20 tap. Then a screw in a bolt and use it like a puller to remove it.

This same question was asked a few months ago, and someone said he would put it in the freezer for a few hours, then he could get it out using vice grips. I've never tried it, and don't remember who it was that suggested it, but he said it worked. I guess the shrinkage rate on brass is enough different than steel or carbide that it will work.

Measure twice, cut once.

What you need is a stuck case remover.They are made by R.C.B.S. or Hornady and others. Or depending the make of the die you can send it to factory and they will remove it for you.

Welcome to the club! If it is in there too tight even the stuck case remover may be helpless- I tried. I used ATF's second method and just sent the die back to the factory (RCBS) with a note saying "I was an idiot"! and included $5 in the box for return postage. The die came back in 10 days and they never said a word about it.

I'm also a dufus,I've stuck'em.I think every reloader should have a stuck case remover.It's worth the investment if you just use it once.Bob.

I've had bad luck with case removal and ended up with scratched dies.
If you can manage to get the depriming punch out with the expander then you might drive the case out from the inside.
If you could get some dry ice, which is a lot colder than a freezer, the differences in coefficients of expansion might be enough for the case to come out easily.
I pulled the head off the last case I stuck.

What brand of die? I have had this happen only with Lee dies so far. To remove the case I have unscrewed the retaining collet, and held a block of hardwood (I used oak) against the top of the expander rod. I then hit the block of wood until the case punched out. You probably still won't be able to remove the expander rod; next I took a dremel tool with cutter and carefully cut through the case neck just below the shoulder and removed the expander. Then I reassemble the dies. No real trouble. I imagine it would work with other brands of dies but proceed at your own risk, you could conceivably bend the expander this way.

Like the rest of the guy I been there to, if you can use a 3/16 inch drill bit and tap 1/4x20 a short 3/8 pipe nipple a flat washer 1/4x1 1/2 bolt it should come out, if it is a larger case us 1/2 pipe nipple, good luck. Frank

I have removed several by first taking a small torch and heating the the case up at the base of the primer pocket. wipe off all excess oil in the area, make sure there is no powder or anything that is conbustible in the area. Heat the bottom of the case real good and with a good pair of vice grips and turning with a circular motion they will come out. Good luck and man I know what you are going through!!

Can' offer any better advice than what has allready surfaced but don't put yourself down. If any reloader hasn't entertained this same predicament than I tip my hat to him. This is one of the many reasons I stick with Lee dies. Stuck cases are not a problem with them. One thing I would urge you to do, is get some Imperial Sizing die wax. Midway has it. Prod.#519525 @ 6.29/2 oz. tin. Have never used anything comparable. I use it exclusively now. Even tough case forming when doing conversions is easier. I once went through 100 348 Win cases while trying to make 8MM Lebel's and yielded only about 25 usable pieces. the rest were all crumpled. Thats when I started using Imperial. The next batch yielded 100 out of 100. That sold me right there. Like that commercial says "Try it; you'll like it"
