Not too sure about the A4, but the A2 has windage and elevation ajustable sights, ejection port door, Forward assist, Brass deflector, Raised mag release fense, and the stock is the 1" longer version of the "non-collapsable" butstocks

The A2 has the handle molded into the upper receiver.
The A4 has a removeable handle on top, and will reveal a flat-top
receiver underneath, for scope mounting, when the handle is removed.

Wonder if the "A4" is being confused with the "M4"??

The A2 is a 20" rifle with fixed carry handle, adjustable sights,
    brass deflector, and forward assist.
The M4 is a 14.5"-16" carbine with a flat-top mil-spec picatiny (like weaver style cross cuts but not exactly the same) rail. It can have a removable carry handle or other sighting devise.
The A3 is the same as the M4 but it has a 20" rifle barrel.

The Armalite uses a designation of A2 for their rifles with the fixed carry handle the "A-4" for its flat top rifles ... this seems to be the case with all but the AR-10T National Match .308 offering ... even the .223 counter-part are designated:

    Flat top models -
    M15A4(T)T
    M15A4(T)T Carbine
    M15A4T (*flattop)
    M15A4T Carbine

    Fixed carry handles models -
    M15A2T
    M15A2T Carbine
    M15A2T National Match Rifle

Go to www.ar15.com for tons of info on AR type rifles. It is a excellent site for pre- and post-buy info. Go to the "AR15 board" If you get a flat top you will want to get a set of front/rear sights for back-up (either regular or flip-up).
