270 vs 7mm mag

Want to know overall which is a better gun. A 270 or 7mm mag. Will be using it for deer and possibly elk in colorado. I really appreciate all the suggestions on this forum. It has educated me and others that I have passed on info. to. Thanks for the feedback.[:)]

  what range will your shots usually be within? if you don't shoot much past 300yds, I wouldn't really think you needed the 7mm mag for whitetail. Now, if you want to push heavier bullets at velocities that will ensure deeper penetration on an elk at 300+ yds, I would go with the 7mm mag. A 162gr a-max out of a 26" barreled 7mag will be all you need to do the job on whitetail out to ranges beyond the scope of this discussion, and that weight should also be good for a large elk. I would have my reservations about a 270 on a long shot at an elk, and let's face it, they don't always walk right up close for you to shoot them. I'm not saying the 270 isn't capable, I'm saying the 7mm mag is MORE capable. HTH

  I lived and hunted in CO for 50 years. I have had both 7 and 270. I have killed both with both. Ballisticly the 7 mag has a slight edge on the 270. If you are going for the BIG bulls the 175 gr in the 7 mag would be my choice. Use only premium bullets in either for everthing!![^]
  My pet load for everything I hunted was a Nosler Partition 160 gr in the 7 mag, and (if the rifle would shot them) the Barnes X 140 gr in the 270, if not the 150 gr. Nosler Partition.[:)]

  I looked long and hard with the same questions for moose and caribou here in AK, I finally figured it is better to have more power and not need it than need more power and not have it!

  You might check out the .270 short mag. winchester is making it in a model 70. This round is great. My father just bought one for elk hunting out in colorado. Its still the .270 but faster moving than the regular version.

  The difference between a .270 and 7mm mag is 30 grains of bullet weight. The .270 has the same velocity and trajectory with the 130 gr. bullet as the 7mm mag with the 160 gr. bullet. This makes very little difference on deer but is a plus on larger animals like Elk or Moose. This at all "reasonable hunting ranges"

  ACTION speaks louder than words shoot them both and you will find there is a big difference between any magnum. a 270 should not be class with a 7mm or 300mag if you want long range and knock down power go with the 7mm.
