Beretta Shotgun

At the Sacramento gun show I looked at the Beretta O/U 686,also some others, any advise on what shotgun to get, 12 or 20 gauge,most of my shooting will be Trap and Bird hunting, I have a Browning A-5, want to up grade, Thanks for your replies, Les

  I have a Beretta 20ga. model A 303 with an 181/2" 23/4 barrel and a 3" magnum 24" barrel for it. It is in excellant condition, wondering what it is worth?

  For trap you definitely need a 12 ga. I am a Browning fan. Take a look at Browning Citori O/Us. New Citoris come with choke tubes. Full, Improved Mod., and Mod. are good for trap. You will may need a more open choke for birds, possibly Imp. Cyl. I like 30-32 in. barrels for trap and 26 in. for hunting quail. You could compromise and get 28 in. or spend a little more and get two sets of barrels in your choice of lengths.
  
  You might consider geeting a Trap gun in 12 ga. and a bird gun in 20 ga. (I find it easy to spend other peoples money).

  There's just no such thing as an "upgrade" to an A-5. As far as an auto scattergun the A-5 is king of the hill!
  
  Then there are the elegant doubles and O/U's. Different guns completely. I own all three styles and have no preference in general. In particular, though, I prefer a double or O/U for upland game.
  
  That being said... Don't forget the Ruger Red Label when you look at O/U's. In the end just pick the gun that feels best and don't worry too much about the maker. A good name is a good name. Buy any one of these and your grandson will be giving it to his son. Quality and safety will never be an issue.

  Shotguns are a matter of choice most of the brand name over and unders are of good quality and yes I agree the browning is an excellent choice. But as far as cal, I own and operate an upland game farm as well as sell guns and when our clients show up to pheasant hunt were always glad to see the 12 ga. But weve had some good old boys that can really shoot 20s and do really well . People forget, the pheasant is a hard bird to kill at times. But it just depends on the type of upland birds or waterfowl your going to be hunting. For quail I prefer the 20 ga.

  Porting may reduce the APPARENT (or felt) recoil. It is most useful in shooting doubles, because it reduces muzzle flip and makes it easier to shoot the second clay.
