Model 700 conversion

I have a heavy barrel Model 700 in 243 that I would
like to convert to one of remingtons new short magnums.
Is this conversion feasible and worthwhile. If it is can
someone recommend where to get it done.

  It is possible.
  You would obviously need to re bbl and you would have to open up the bolt face, this can be done while installing a Sako extractor (a common mod on customs build on the Rem 700).

  You can have that work done. Bolt face, New Barrel for your caliber of choice, Magazine and Feed Rail modifications - all together, will cost you much more than just buying a new Factory rifle. I would guess that even if you just did the bolt face and whatever magazine/feed alterations were necessary and simply rechambered your existing barrel - if it is near new - it will still cost you close to the price of a new factory rifle in the calibre of your choice. Unless you want a particularly unique or particularly accurate custom gun - for the cost of 'converting' just buy another rifle - and for the same money you will have two rifles. Or if money is an object - sell your .243 Varmint and apply that to another factory rifle - you will be even more money ahead. I am a gunsmith, but I can be brutally honest.

  I don't think they make a 243 SM, so a rechambering is out of the question.[:)]

  Jim Rau, Winchester has just come out with a .243 and a .223 short magnum. They were on the back page advertisement in the latest Guns and Ammo.

  Winchester has announced the WSSM (short short)in 223 and 243 not the WSM. These are due to be staged at S.H.O.T. show in Florida in February of this year. The rifles are due to be released sometime in April or more to the point when Winchester gets the feeding figured out. These will be made on new, slightly shorter actions. No offense intended.

  Nononsense, no offense taken, I was not clear and was not trying to say that these are Winchester short mag cases necked down to .223 and 243. They are new cartridges designated Winchester Super Short Magnum or WSSM in .223 and .243 These short magnum cartridges run at approx. 65,000 (psi?) Can any old Remington 700 action handle these pressures?

  Generally speaking the answer would be yes, any Remington 700 can withstand the 65,000 psi range of pressures. But as you well know the first time that you make a blanket statement someone comes along to to prove you wrong. With the advent of the UltraMags at 65,000 psi and the resultant conversion that I'm sure the Remington lawyers took into account it is fairly safe to "assume" that these receivers are capable. It is also fairly safe to say that in our most accurate standard hunting loads, we are usually below the 65,000 psi threshold.
