.38 SUPER best target loads/best combat loads
i have purchased a STAR MODEL A semiautomatc pistol in .38 SUPER. i was told that the best load for target shooting was the 124 gr copper jacketed round nose (mil-spec ball ammo). i picked up a box of CORBON`s for self defense purposes (not a cheap item).
what is the opinion of the board??? what is the prefered target load??? what is the best self defense/combat load??? is there a decent hollowpoint bullet to use in handloads??? what about semi-wadcutters???
anybody shoot or load a .38 SUPER on a reguler basis??? best regards, mike.
What other dungeon is so dark as ones own heart, what jailer so inexorable as ones own mind.

If you have a Star Model A with the original Spanish Barrel that was issued with it, I would be very cautious.
The correct caliber for your pistol is the Spanish 9mm Largo. There is a dimensional difference of approximately .007 between the .38 Super (.383) & the Largo (.390) at the base just forward of the canalure.
Personally I would hold off shooting any hot Corbon loads in it till I was sure it was safe.
Get some of the Winchester 9 x 23 brass, it's hell for stout and has the same external dimensions as the Largo.
Use 9mm data & bullets, just be carefull, some of the early Model A's date to the 1920's.0 -
Star made a LOT of .38 Supers. Just make sure it is indeed that. Star made a lot of guns in .38 Super. There is NO BEST. Shoot whatever you like or can afford. It's like abortion. It's about CHOICE. So make some. 0 -
the gun is clearly marked .38 super. MILITARY SMALL ARMS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, MODERN GUN VALUES, PISTOLS AND REVOLVERS OF THE WORLD, and the ILLUSTRATED DIRECTORY OF 20TH CENTURY GUNS all list the star model a offered in .38 super. these guns are not cheap knock-offs. my father has used his star model b in compatition. we have a star model super b in the shop for sale right now. these guns are well made, as good as the 1911al`s of the period.
i had hoped that someone out there would have some experiance with the .38 super, shooting and reloading. best regards, mike.
