Deciding on deer caliber
I plan to buy a Savage Striker pistol soon to use here in TN for next deer season. I'm trying to decide on what caliber to get, it's between a 7mm-08, .270 WSM, or a .308. I do the majority of my hunting from a treestand, based on the vegatation/terrain here my shots will be from 0-225 yards, most being only about 40-100 yards. Will appreciate any and all comments, specifically on the accuracy I can expect from any of these calibers in the Striker pistol and where might be the cheapest place to get one.....Thanks!!

All three you mentioned should work well at those distances. I would give the edge to the 270wsm as far as knock down power. 0 -
You'll probably get favorites from a lot of folks,here's mine.The 308Win is one of the best calibers out there and for handloaders it's an excellent choice.I've had very good success with one shot kills with the 308.I've never shot a Striker but with my Encore factory shells are a bit much when it comes to recoil.I've had very good success with handloaded 125Gn Nosler BT's.Just thought I'd throw that in there.Good luck and good shootin',Bob. 0 -
I'm just curious. You ever shoot one of those hand cannons? Mind you, you do have some time to find out if one of 'em is for you. If you can, shoot one before you buy. A scoped .44 mag will do for 40 to 100 yards. Pass up the shots you haven't sighted in for. Think a 9" paper plate every time with whatever you're using at 100 minimum. 0 -
I have a TC Encore in .308 Win. and it is one of the most accurate firearms I own. .308 is more than enough for whitetails (shot placement is always important). Recoil from the .308 Encore is significant, but manageable. Mine is scoped with a Burris 3x9 Posi-Lock. 0 -
jgill13, Before you buy the "handcannon" as someone referred to it, try to find an ORIGINAL style XP-100 Remington to shoot or at least feel of! By ORIGINAL I mean the ones that had a center grip stock instead of the later models which had rear grips. The balance of them makes them much easier to handle and shoot aaccurately! As far as a deer caliber in one, for the ranges you speak of, there's not a better caliber out there in a hangun than the 7mmBenchRest round! Accurate, easy on the shooter and deadly!! OK Why don't you get the 25-06.Proven time and again a great deer round.Great gun out of a tree stand.Many a white tail shot whith this caliber.Just my 2 0 -
String, I don't know whether your comment was made because of my posts about the 25-06 or not but it would be quite the round in a handgun! Another round that wasn't mentioned that is available in the Striker is the 260Rem. there are several Strikers listed on the auction site of GB and at least 1 260 is there. GHD 0 -

jgill13, The 260 is a mild recoiling accurate round in rifles. My 13 year old daughter shoots one very well. It has good ballistics and was originally used for long range target shooting. I have shot xp-100's in 260 and they are managable but they have been the new style with rear grips. I beleive if you try one in the Striker you might like it. I feel like in an xp if you had the center grip stock like the old models or a custom stock it would be a potent whitetail handgun round. GHD 0 -

I like the 308. Easy to find ammo, military, and commerical rounds available. Excellent sniper round. Hell even the M60 belt fed guns on the Military Helicoptors use 308. 0
