I'm not a big Winchester fan. However whenever I heard guys talking about pre64 clover leaf tangs they were talking about model 88 Winchesters. I'm sure some one here will give us the whole story.

Tim, The later model tang, when viewed from above, has an elongated football shape with long sweeping sides extending to the very back fo the tang. The earlier, cloverleaf, tang has the long curved sides ending just foreward of the rear triggerguard screw hole. The screw hole in the cloverleaf tang is in the center of an extension that forms the rear of the tang.

A 1947 should have a cloverleaf tang. They officially changed the tang at about s/n 80,000 but like everything else with these rifles there are exceptions. Hope this helps.
