Without a Complete and Total Discription, its impossible to place a Value upon your Percussion Double...Be SPECIFIC and let Me know just what You have...Every Number and Letter..Condition of the Barrels, Stock, Engraved or not..Trigger Guard...Butt Plate..Proof Marks....Over all Condition...?........

The gun is pretty beat up the barrels are rusty, We just want to find out what year it is. We know that this gun was used in the civil war. How can we trace it to Zachary Taylor York. W. Richards is engraved in the gun. that is the only thing that I can see. 0 -

I don't know of any possible way to trace its parentage...In the Condition you discribe its worth maybe $150.00.....Sorry I can't be of any more help...but you've left me with NO trail to follow.....

Not so fast....!!!
A vast difference between Westely Richards and W. Richards and your gun isn't the former. Rather, you have an inexpensive knockoff (probably Belgian) with no real parentage, no history, and very little worth... Even if in new condition, which yours isn't.
Proof marks will almost certainly be Belgian. Look for the "ELG" or a stamp that looks a bit like the Eiffel Tower. And even if you see British proofs (a combination of swords and crown, mostly), the gun is still near worthless.
Sorry.
