Glock Kaboom!
I guess I'm done with .40 cal Glocks - all the Kaboom stories I have heard concerning Glocks and reloads have scared me off. Can anyone recommend a .40 cal I would not have to be concerned about experiencing a Kaboom with while using reloads?

Heard a lot of Kb! stories too, but I heard it was on the earlier pistols. I wouldn't worry about it, but if you are concerned, perhaps a Witness or SIG, maybe even H&K. 0 -
I am in the process of selling my older(?) style Glock 23 because of the stories. I'm not giving up on the .40 because it such a great caliber and I'm geared up for reloading it, but I want a gun I won't have to worry about blowing up in my hand. 0 -
When I was ready to purchase a hi-cap .40S&W pistol, I too was put off by the stories I heard about Glock KBs. Since I didn't want to lay out too much money, I went with a S&W SW40F.
It's very similar in design to the Glock but I believe the cases are fully supported in the chamber and the conventional rifling is supposed to be more amenable to unjacketed bullets (this is what I've heard, I have no hard evidence to substantiate this). I like the slimmer grip profile too.
Consider an SW40.0 -
Personally think the Glock Kaboom has been totally blown out of proportion and has just gotten bad press. Competition can be nasty at times. If you are really concerned go with a Sig 229.

I also believe the KB thing has been "blown up" to be a bigger problem than it is. If you like the G23, just invest 90.00 +/- in an aftermaket barrel with the fully supported chamber.
I have put several hundred of my own FMJ reloads through my G23 and G27 without a problem. JMHO

I hear that they transfer a good deal of recoil to the shooter. That is a caveat I have heard from several people, other than that, I wouldn't think quality would be an issue with the Sig company product.

There are some issues with H&K USP's also. Excellent .40 S&W include, Smith & Wesson, Para-Ordnance, Beretta, SIG, Colt, Ruger and all of the top name firearms builders.

I am no Glock fan, but I am a fan of the truth.
When the case head ruptures, gases escape. Most go down the magazine well and out. Some will escape from the barrel/breech juncture, and some where the slide meets the frame.
It is disconcerting to the shooter, maybe even alarming, but it is not like letting a grenade go off in your hand. At most, you might get a slight burn and/or small cuts from brass fragments.
Get a SIG if it worries you.
Incidentally, I have seen the same phenomenon with Glocks, Berettas, and Smith & Wessons. Even one with a Grendel .380. The Glock and the Grendel were the only ones that were damaged.

I had the same problem. I bought a glock 22 without knowing about the kaboom stories. after 3 months i trade in and got myself a para-ordnance p-14 with high caps. i freaked out!! My girlfriend did the same. She trade her glock 17 for a springfield armory 1911.
I might have done it wrong but i like my para-ordnance and i rather be careful than sorry!!0 -

Well rugster, there you go... how many of the stories have been documented - I don't have a clue! I have personally never experienced a kaboom, and I do not know of anyone that has, so what do you do? The kaboom stories seem to persist though, and with the exception of the Loch Ness monster, not many stories survive very long without some real proof, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
The idea of a fully supported after-market barrel sounds interesting though - I'll have to check into that one.0 -
I have a Glock 22 that I have had for about 10 years and all it has ever seen is reloads. I have never had a problem with case failure. I had a blow out in a Kimber 45acp because I was dumb enough to load a hot load in a Remington case. The only blow up I have in a 40 S&W was in a model 31 Star, and that occured when I pulled a load out of an NRA article. I reduced the load of AA2 by .2 gr and the second shot blew the head off the case. I checked the Accurate manual, and found that the load they had been shooting in the article was a full grain over the recommended maximum load. There is nothing like a load noise and metal fragments to educate you to check several sources before you try a new load. 0 -
i have a older 23 and a 22 i would NOT trade them if you shoot reloads just do not get careless

The kaboom issue had very little to do with my selling my Glock 23, but it did make me just a tiny bit less trustful of 40 S&W. Frankly I'm less concerned with the gun and more concerned with a gun failure when I'm shooting in self-defense. The probability of a 40 S&W kaboom is too rare to be an issue. It's easier for me to just shoot .45 ACP and the Glock 30 is one fine 45!

Again, get yourself an aftermarket Barrel.....My friend bought one for his G23 and 27...He has shot the heck out of them using lead reloads that I would not use on a bet. I think Nunn summed it up well. I have seen a S&W and a Colt do it. I have no doubt Glocks have KB'ed and know a range officer that had it happen to him.

After market barrels are NOT polygonal thus lead is NOT an issue. Also Dean Spier who has done more work on the kboom issue and is the source of the term can not find ONE case of a .40 S&W Glock blowing with an aftermarket barrel which should tell us something.
There was one small lot of Federal .40 S&W ammo that was an issue, but not much got out and that was years ago. This is yet ANOTHER issue Glock won't address. Like their G17 recall in the early 1990's of over 400,000 guns. They dragged that out to the last moment.0
