I don't think one would be better than the other. I think it comes down to what you prefer. I hunted the plains and mountains of Wyoming and I have taken deer and antelope with a 270, I even used it for elk one year. My mom has shot a 243 all her life and has taken many deer and antelope with it. My sister in-law shot her first big game (a moose) with a 243. Personaly I like the 270 it was a good shooter. [8D]

Your post is sure to "stir the pot", but, given your choices and use, the 270 is the ONLY one.

I'll get in early. The 243 is adequate for deer and antelope in most cases with proper bullets. The bullet performance is more important in these smaller cartridges than with more powerful rounds. The lighter recoil will make good shot placement easier which is another factor. Personally, I don't care for the 270. If you want that much recoil, get a 30/06 and you'll have a tremendously better rifle.

I think you'd have to see which one you could shoot better. If you do your part both of those bullets will kill just fine. I would prefer the 270 over the 243, longer range and heavier bullets available. Just my opinion.

Well I'd choose a 6.5X55 as my first choice.

The 243 if that is all the bigger game you want to hunt and think you will shoot some varmit. The 270 if you think you will be hunting bigger game than mentioned.

Take a look at the 270 Short Mag. It combines the speed of the 243 but the nock down power of the 270

257 Roberts, hands down. Less womp and stomp then the 270 and better performance then the 243.

You should go to middle ground and get a real gun!! 25-06!! Nothing better out there for what you intend to shoot!! GHD

No Contest. 270 hands down. Especially If you are going to hunt Whitetails/or mulies on open plains. 270 is flatter shooting, bigger bullet weights, more energy on and on . Consider the 270,280,30-06. These would be good choices for Deer/Antelope. These 3 calibers are FAR from being what some might label as "overkill" or something along those lines. These 3 are my minimum in my book on flat praire and shots over 200 yards. My Whitetail this year was 330 yards standing I shot this year. I was using my 7Mag. If I'd a been carrying a 243 I'da just as well carrying a bb gun and watched him run over the hill.
