Choke on Winchester Model 12

Hello : I just aquired a Model 12 in excellent 95%+ that was made in about 1953 (I understand) the barrell has a differant number than the receiver and it has a Lyman choke attached which has vertical vents and an two screw in insert (full and modified) my questions are, has this choke system detracted from the guns value ? and is it removable without doing damage to the barrel and if removable has the bead been removed for installation, lastly if removable how and should I.I am not an avid bird hunter and only carry a shotgun for the occasional grouse while deer hunting and wonder if I should even condider taking a piece like this along and possibly damaging it.-THANKS FOR ANY REPLIES AND INPUT - Darrell "The Sandman" Sanderson - You can reply here or my email - dlscas@earthlink.net Thanks Again

  Yes the choke you speak of greatly detracts from the value of your gun, whether installed by the factory, or a person after purchase. The choke screws off your threaded barrel. First remove the two small screws, then put barrel in a barrel vice.With a large wrench that hope fully fits the flats on your choke, put medium pressure on wrench, while warming with a propane torch. The ones i've taken off, were on very tight. When you have screwed the choke off your barrel,it will look like hell, with the threads left out in the open. You then cut your barrel off to get rid of the threads.This will leave you with a cylinder bore, or no choke.You may be able to install thin wall chokes, but it will be tricky.I have two model 12 that I have put thin walls in, but it is really close, as there is not much meat in a MODEL 12 barrel.

  I will add one more thing. Make sure that when you are finished the barrel length is as least 18 inches. Sometimes things are overlooked and this can be a very big issue if the barrel ends up shorter.
