Anyone Blackpowder shotgun

Hey Does anyone use a blackpowder shotgun?I am looking at one looks great nice wood never shot.I am guessing it goes powder, wad,shot,thena patch of some sort. can I use steel-bismith-hevishot.
Its a CVA 12ga sxs straight stock
I should say I will load this gun minus caps then use for the first walk then hunt the rest of the day with another shotgun depending on what I am hunting for.Do they make those powder pellets for a 12 ga?

    Since you don't yet have a better answer, I'll give you my limited one..My brother shoots a BP shotgun and your loading procedure is about right, although you can also buy shot cups made from plastic instead of using all the wads. Either is fine. On the shot type, no steel shot unless it has a SS lined barrel. Don't know about the other two. I haven't heard of any powder pellets for 12 ga, but they might be available. I hope you get a more educated answer, but maybe this will help some.

    Yes, I am an old geezer and I hunt with black powder shotguns, both muzzle-stuffers and black powder shotshell. I use Damascus barrels as well as modern steel barrels. Unless you have CONSIDERABLE experience with Damascus barrels, you have no business using a muzzle-stuffing Damascus barreled shotgun.

    Yours of course is modern steel. CVA stuff is usually made in Spain and is normally a reasonable field quality machine with chrome lined barrels and modified chokes.

    I happen to like Italian made Pedersoli's, but that is just me. If I could find a shotgun barrel to go on my Sile .50 caliber that was made in Spain, I would do it in a heartbeat.

    If you are going to shoot a muzzle-stuffer, you need a Dixie Gun Works, Inc. catalog. There is a world on information in the front and back of the catalog that will be of interest to you.

    You will also need 11 gauge components for your shotgun. Since there is no shotshell casing, 12 gauge components are a snug too small. Buy NEW component from Dixie Gun Works or some other company that specialized in black powder components. Dixie Gun Works, Inc. website is www.dixiegunworks.com

    Also --- forget using thin over shot cards, you will regret it. Use a regular over powder wad over the shot column or the recoil will dislodge the thin over shot card and things are going to get interesting.

    First thing to do, is put a sling on it. If it does not have swivel studs for a sling, it needs them. The necessary materials can be found in catalog #55 (2002-2003) from Brownells.

    You can use Pyrodex RS or CleanShot as your propellant, in addition to black powder. If you are going to use a black powder substitute, I would suggest CleanShot in FFg granulation. BUT--you must make sure that the over powder card is WELL seated on the propellant for it to work correctly. If you are going to use black powder, I would suggest "Swiss" as first choice, "Elephant" as second choice and "Goex" lastly. The first two (in FFg granulation) burn much cleaner.

    Clean up will go much faster with "Simple Green" and then boiling hot water. After the barrels have dried -- swab them out lightly with a good light oil such as "Kroil".

    I have a CVA Trapper single shot 12 gauge. I purchased it many years ago,from Cabela's. The manual states, the barrel loading sequence when independent wads are utilized is: 1. Chosen volumetric powder charge 2.One over-powder wad 3.One filler wad 4.Chosen volumetric shot pellet charge. 5.One over shot wad. They also require different wads for the use of buckshot. It also states , never substitute independent over powder wad for the over the shot wad. It also states that the chokes must be removed before loading. It also states:WARNING:Never use steel shot in a CVA Shotgun. There is a wealth of information in this CVA shotgun manual. I would suggest contacting CVA, if they are still in business, and request a manual. If that does not work for you, e-mail me and I will mail my manual to you so you can retreive the information you need. I will not copy it as it is copyrighted. You can return the manual to me when you are finished.

    Adams I also love old shotguns but am far from afording ones of the class you speak.I do have a browning superposed lighting 20 also a ithaca(skb)280e quail sp 20 very light fast handling,I was thinking about getting the BP but know I am not so sure but the gun look real nice new unfired with weatherby looking wood for 200 bucks I might not shoot it just put on wall.
