M14/ M16 questions please
1/Was the M16 manufactured by Colt?
2/ What's the difference between the M14 and M16?
3/ Which was used in "the Nam"?

I'm not the expert but I will give it a shot. 1. M16 was made by colt 2. m14 chambered in 308 weighted about 9 pounds, M16 223 weighted about 6.5 pounds 3. I think both were used 4. How did they perform in battle? Not sure I was never there. 0 -
1/ Colt held the first military contract, and most of them up unitl recently.
2/ Two entirly different weapons systems.
The M14 is chambered for .308 or 7.62x51 NATO, and is a magazine fed gas-operated, air-cooled, select fire rifle with a magazine capacity of 20 rounds. It's main construction is of iron and wood.
The M16 is chambered for 5.56X45 or .223 Rem.and is a magazine fed gas-operated, air-cooled, select fire rifle with a magazine capacity of either 20 or 30 rounds. It's main construction is of plastic and aluminum.
3/Both were used, the M16A1 far more than the M14 later on.
4/The M14 was heavier, and so was the ammo, but a known, battle-proven reliable design. The first M16's got a whole hell of a lot of guys killed. The M16A1 was an improvement with the foward assist to close the bolt, as well as few other modifications.

Take a look at Securityarms.com and look up the M14/M1A and the M16/M4/AR15. They are two completely different animals. Two different theories of operation too. The M14 tends to sweep debris out of the receiver, the M16 intentionally puts debris in the receiver (guess it seemed like a good idea to someone) [:D] 0 -

PS, Might add, if you've seen an M1A, the M14 looks very simular, so you would be able to understand besides caliber, the M14 and M16 were totally different guns.

AS A MARINE NCO, I HAD 2 1/2 TOURS IN NAM. IN '65/66 WE HAD THE M-14. GREAT RIFLE, EASY TO CLEAN, NO STOPPAGES I EVER SAW. CLEARED BRUSH, BAMBOO, HUTS AND GOOKS WELL. IN 68-70 WE HAD THE CHANCE TO USE M-16. WE TIRED IT. FIRST FIRE FIGHT, IT JAMMED 2ND SHOT(1ST SHOT DID THE JOB), USED 1911A1 TO FINISH SKIRMISH. AFTERWARDS, CHECKED M-16 OUT, COULD FIND NO PROBLEM, GAVE IT TO MY ARVV SCOUT, GOT MY M-14 BACK AND KEEPT ON TRUCKIN. NOBODY HAD GOOD LUCK WITH THE MI6 IN THOSE DAYS. WE NEVER EVEN GOT PROPER CLEANING RODS, A REAL NECISITY WITH THIS DINKY RIFLE, AND WATER IN THE BARREL WOULD BE A DISASTER.(DURING MOONSOON, EVERYTHING HAD WATER IN IT) THE .223 COULD KILL OUTRIGHT, BUT USUALLY TOOK SEVERAL BODY HITS TO MAKE AN IMPRESSION. USUALLY 1 .308 WOULD DO THE TRICK. ALSO, WATER BUFFALO COULD SOAK UP AND UNGODLY AMMOUNT OF .223 AND BE REALLY "P" OFF!!

While I'll be the last guy to disagree with a line veteran, you should know that the current issue M16A2 and A3 have significantly improved over the M16 originally issued to troops 35 years ago.
The standard issue military ammo also has changed, now including a heavier bullet w/ hardened core for better penetration and energy transfer on soft targets.
The 7.62 vs. 5.56 debate will rage forever, and I'm not interested in resolving it here. Suffice it say that I have both calibers and I'd trust either one when the Canadians finally invade.
