speaking of serial numbers

i bought a remington model 511 "scoremaster" from a dealer and the rifle has no serial#, on the yellow form i was given as a reciept it specifically reads "ns" for no serial number. what does this mean?

  It means exactly as it implies...NS No Serial Number... There were makers that did not put a Serial Number on all thier Guns...Winchester was one such..and there are others in the line up.....

  Prior to the Gun Control Act of 1968 not all firearms were requiered to have serial numbers. Many, mostly .22 rifles and some shotguns were not serial numbered so you are not in violation of any law with your Remington. After the 1968 GCA all firearms had to have serial numbers and these numbers must not appear on any other firearm from the same manufacturer. A S&W Model 27 and Model 29 could NOT have the same serial number even though the model and caliber of the pistols are totally different. I believe however that imported handguns were requiered to have visable serial numbers since the 1920's- that is if they were brought in through normal commerce.

  Prior to the passage of the gun law in 1968 it was not uncommon for certain "economy" models of .22 rifles and shotguns to be manufactured and sold without serial numbers. In the past I've owned a High Standard Model 60 shotgun and a Mossberg Model 152 .22 rifle that didn't have serial numbers.
  This changed after the 1968 gun law was passed.
  Since these older firearms were manufactured and sold without serial numbers, what else could the dealer do?

  My first deer rifle a Savage 30/30 Model 340 bought new in 1956 had no serial number.
