What is the best defense round to use in my 9mm?

    First off Welcome.....You will get a bunch of different answers to this question. To truly find out what the best 9mm defense ammo, you will need to try out several different brands and see how they do in your gun.

    I currently use the Federal 9BP. 115 Gr. JHP. It has been around for a long time, but it shoots well in my Glock 19 and has never jammed in 300 + rounds. Low flash and managable recoil. There are "better" loads out there, but I am comfortable with this one.

    I have tried the Corbons, Federal self defense, and other brands but keep coming back to the 9BP. My final thought is find one that works for you and practice, practice, practice....Good luck with your choice.

    There is no "best." To this date we have NO clue if one bullet or even caliber works better than another. A lot of snake oil out there, but the key is to hit what you shoot at. That is the hard part. If you get that far ammo choice is secondary. 50% of hollowpoints don't expand when recovered for a variety of reasons, and that is true of ALL brands and types. Most hits are marginal and not enough tissue to cause any expansion. About 15% of all self defense shootings are frontal center mass at most. The rest are odd angles etc.
    Placement is always second fiddle to most gun rag types who are trying to sell bullets/ammo.

    Try Remington Golden Sabre 124 grain. I don't think you will have to ever say you're sorry...

    I prefer a 124gr. bullet. Just a personal preference. CCI Gold Dot, Federal hydro-shok and Remington Golden Sabre are all good choices.

    Suggest you consider RBCD ammo for defensive purposes. Fairly pricey - roughly $35 / 20 rounds - but performance is impressive.

    The feature articles archive on this site http://www.firearmsid.com/index.htm, has some interesting obsersations. The one that stuck me as most interesting was that with shorter barreled weapons, a heavey slug would perform better. No doubt many will comment on that. I have found that 115 grain loads are less stable (tend keyhole)whether fired from a short (Kel-Tec), intermediate (Browning) or long (Ruger Blackhawk) barrel. Am planning on trying some 147 grain slugs.

    One of the best choices is whatever ammo the area LEOs use as duty rounds. That way if you ever have the unfortunate circumstance of having to use it, you can't have some shyster lawyer make you out as some gun fanatic with 'killer' bullets.

    My preference is CarBon +P 115 GR JHP. My Browning Hi-Power, CZ 75, and Walther P5 handle it very nicely. Best part is that I can still buy for $10.89/20 cartridges.

    Gun magazine nonsense. Nobody has found such a case in years of research that resulted in any consequences. But it "sounds good."
    If the shooting is legal the bullets/gun or such are NOT an issue.
    What are you goingn to reload that is so devastating that would exceed factory? You might be able to push a .38 special to close to .357 specs. An issue? NOT! How far can you take a 9mm? To .38 Super levels maybe? No lawyer worth his salt would ever go there. They may be dumb but they are NOT that dumb. This urban legend has floated around for ages thanks to gun magazines with little knowledge of such issues. There are enough things to worry about without having to make up stuff.
    We did get a case two years or so ago where the lawyer wanted to make an issue out of the shooter using Black Talons. The lawyer watched a lot of TV I guess or watched CNN. ONE LETTER ended that one. A shame we didn't let him take this great tidbit into a court room. He'd have been dead meat. He said, " nobody has survived being hit by one of these horrific bullets." Really? Imagine what would happen if he took that to a courtroom and found out the hard way that isn't true? Rather that eat up funds litigating we clued him in. I suspect he may have found out before anyway.
    If the damage a bullet could/can do was a legal issue imagine the fun they'd have with shotguns.

    You didn't state what 9mm you are using; you'll want a +P for a compact short barrel (less than about 4") gun. You don't really need +P for a full size gun like SIG P226 or a Beretta 92.

    I'd recommend you buy 4 boxes; Corbon, Federal HydraShok, CCI Gold Dot, and Remington Golden Saber. Test them all and use whatever is most accurate & reliable in your gun. Make sure you do test--you don't want a non-feeding round in your gun when a BG shows up in your home.
