Mag-10 modification

Would anyone know what modification I would have to make on an early Ithaca Mag 10 to make it a more reliable steel shot shooter? It was a reliable ejector back in the "lead" days,but not a 100% ejector with todays steel!Where can I get the necessary parts.Unless the gas port has to be modified I can handle it's dismantling and re-assembly.

  I have a Mag 10 that shoots steel loads just fine. You may want to check with www.ballisticproducts.com and order one of the Wolf spring kits. Another thing you might want to try is to switch over to Bismuth or Hevi-Shot loads. But I believe your problem is in the spring or possibly the gas port.

  I also have a Mag-10 and had the barrel backbored and screw-in chokes installed to accomadate an improved choke (improved leaded equals a modified steel choke, I believe). I had some problems with some of the teflon buffer breaking off into pieces at the rear of the bolt mechanism. I ordered a new one from Ithica Arms Acquisition back east (they ae now back in business). While I was waiting for the part, I dug out all of the broken teflon pieces and the gun then shot just fine. Probably the back of the reciever may be takng a beating, but I haven't noticed any problems or damage yet.

  I own two of these, wonderful guns, but hey I like 'em all. One is low mileage, and the other is a beater but both cycle steel with never a problem. I'm no gunsmith but suspect another problem. Does the shell not clear the chamber or does it clear the chamber and "stovepipe".

  The empty gets put back in the chamber.I suspect the bolt is moving to fast or not retracting completly. Makes me think of the Browning A-5 where you add a friction ring for heavy loads.

  Well I'm still puzzled so no help from me, but boy does this forum move fast or what. I come back from work and stuff is 2 or 3 pages back.

  My 'MooseDick' works everytime, never had any problems. I suspect your ejector is worn or perhaps the tip is broken off. Obviously the extractor is yanking the empty from the chamber but the ejector is failing to kick it out. I cannot imagine why the gun works with everything but steel loads. If it ISN'T the ejector, I would suggest tearing it down and giving it a good cleaning.....especially the gas ports. Use carburator cleaner to dissolve the deposits and get all the crud out. The brand Walmart sells for a dollar a can is great.
