6.5 JAP TO .257 ROBERTS
IVE HEARD OF THIS CONVERSION A FEW TIMES. IS THE END RESULT WORTH THE COST? I OWN A 6.5 AND NEVER USE IT BECAUSE OF THE COST OF THE NORMA AMMO . AFTER THE CONVERSION, IS THE RIFLE MORE ACCURATE ?

Cheap conversion but .257 Roberts ammo is now hard to find and not cheap. If you reload you can do the 6.5 jap for about same price.
.257 Roberts is accurate but few pushed the rifle to it's limits. The action is damned strong but not very desireable for custom work. It's been done but not cheap.0 -
There are supposed to be bore diameter variations between 6.5 Jap rifles. Before sinking any money into it, slug your bore and see if
it's right for commercial 6.5 bullets.0 -
Why do it? Roberts ammo (fresh) is almost as expensive as 6.6 J. The bore of the 6.5 is MUCH to great for the Roberts. (you would be putting a .257 bullet through a .264 bore). Power and accuracy would be lousy.
You could reload the Roberts case with a 6.5 bullet, and that would make a fine round, but not a lot better than the original and you would have to reload
If you are willing to reload, you might as well stay with the original.
If you alter the original:a) you are destroying history.
b) every dollar you invest in altering a
military firearm REDUCES its value by $2
Leave it alone, learn to reload.

I misread your question and assumed you wanted to do the 6.5-257 conversion that is the 257 case expanded to shoot the 6.5mm bullet. 0 -
Have you thought about .260 Remington? Brass will be easier to get then .257 Roberts. Remington brought it out in 97. It's the .308 necked down to 6.5 mm. The guys on this thread have had good luck with it.

I THINK THE CONVERSION DIRTYRAT IS REFFERING TO IS THE 6.5x.257 (6.5x57MM) THIS WAS A COMMON CONVERSION IN THE 50'S AS ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS RUN A 6.5x257 REAMER IN TO THE JAP. BARREL, FIRE FORM .257 BRASS AND RELOAD WITH 6.5MM BULLETS. THE .260 REM CONVERSION WOULD HAVE TO HAVE THE BARREL SET BACK A THREAD OR TWO. 0 -
According to this thread I referenced on "SHOOTERS" in my previous post. ALL that is required to rechamber the 6.5 mm Jap to .260 Remington is to run a chambering reamer into the bore. One guy even did it freehand without removing the barrel from the action. None of the posters mentioned the need for "setting back the barrel a thread or two"
