    tenniso, this is a big "It Depends" . . . .

    There are often guys with large amounts of Wolf / milsurp stuff whose prices are relatively low.

    The really big savings one can - sometimes - realize are on oddball calibers which local stores, to say nothing of WallyWorld, do not carry. Sometimes it's material which has come in on a trade or been sitting on the shelves so long the seller is glad to unload it.

    Best bet is to know the prices of the local retail outlets and large volume on-line sellers and see what you can find at the show.

    My observation has been that you can order ammo direct much cheaper than at most gunshows or stores. It usually requires you to purchase about 1000rds so depending on what caliber you might be spending $100-250 at a time, but I always figure I'll use the rounds at some point. I ordered 1000rds of 7.62x51 and saved $40 over the gunshow price. I guess it also depends on if you're looking for hunting ammo or just surplus plinking stuff.

    I have bought a little ammo by mail - 303 Savage comes to mind. The catalog prices are the cheapest prices I have ever found. The problem is shipping. It just kills the deal. I go to the Indy 1500 and buy in bulk there. The guys will loan you a 2 wheel dolly to get it to your car. I'm can't help but feel that all the big shows are like that.

    thanks for the welcome iconoclast. i am looking for 38 special ammo for target practice. my buddy said he saw boxes of 100 rnds. for $6. i think he is mistaken, but i'm going this weekend to see what's available.

    i dont know where you guys are from, but you guys would like it here in mississippi. we have very leiniant gun laws. you can carry loaded and concealed in the auto, no registration, only a background check,(no waiting period, i bought my s&w model 10 on my lunch break!) very understanding law enforcement about self defense with a gun, and you can find a very wide variety of handgus, rifles, and "assault weapons" in the gunshops and pawnshops,plenty of ammo, and lots of gunsmiths. it's gun utopia.

    Buy whatever .38's are cheap, save the cases and reload 'em. You get better ammo with none of the BS of hunting for them. Then you buy bullets by the 1,000, usually swaged wad cutters, for about $50 or less. 1,000 primers and a can of Bullseye. Load 'em with 2.7 grains(that's almost 2600 shots per lb.) and go shooting.

    tenniso, it has been my expr. that gun shows (around here) are higher than even the dealers that set up in them. First you pay a fee to park, then a fee of a few bucks to get in the door then you have to compeat with a bunch of like minded people for the same products, Go back to the dealer next week and he is willing to deal or has put prices back in line to sell to the walkin public. Just my two cents. your buddy most likly saw 50 rounds for 6 bucks

    I alwasys buy my ammo in bulk and at the gun show you save money on shipping and you can pick up whatever else you need for your firearm needs which to me covers the parking and the price at the door. If you buy in bulk it is worth going to the gun show if not don't even bother you might save a buck or two on single boxes. I say do the math and figure out which one ends up cheaper!

    Ammo at shows around here is almost always CHEAP. Case in point- I can rely on getting 8mm Turk ammo for $4.99/bandoleer or let's just say $5. If I get 10 that would cost me $50 per 700 or $100 per 1400. While online prices might be slightly less, after paying shipping on something that heavy for $30 or $40, I'd rather just buy it in person.

    I pay $10.50 per box of Winchester .45 at the gun show if I buy in cases of 500. That same ammo would cost me $12 to $14 retail. I figure I am saving roughly $20 per case. I have never had any shipped to me but feel like shipping cost would eat that savings. It cost $5 to enter our gun shows, parking is free, and I get a couple hours of fantasy and entertainment. I refuse to buy ammo from Walmart.
