Ruger M77 compact
Just put one of these in .260 Rem. on layaway for my wife for next deer season. Any opinions here on the shorter/lighter setup with respect to accuracy. I know she will appreciate the lighter weight and fast handling. I also put a Nikon 3-9x40 along with it. Appreciate your opinions.

Tests show that accuracy isn't as affected by barrel length as previuosly thought, so don't let that concern you. As far as power, the 260rem will hold it's own out to 300yds with any caliber out there. I would say that is probably a perfect set-up for a woman to carry and "point".

You'll probably love the 260! For a mild load that is deadly, try 40 grains of VARGET, a 100grain Nosler BT, a Fed. 210Match primer. Not the hottest load out there but very pleasant for a woman or child and pretty darn deadly too! GHD 0 -
Accuracy should be absolutely no problem. I've been told by some gun 'experts' that modern powders in standard (not magnum) calibers need only 15 to 16 inches for complete burn. And there's a whole host of pistol shooters out there, that can outshoot me with a rifle. Velocity will of course not be the same as a longer barrel, but as one person previously stated it will bust 'em at least to 300 yards. BUT-- one drawback--muzzleblast. Any gun with an overall length of 40 inches or less will cause permanent ear damage each and every time the trigger is pulled. Check it out. Decibel levels go up a factor of 1 with each 1 inch of barrel loss, which translates to a 10x increase in noise. I had a Ruger RSI in 308 with an 18.5 barrel, and it gave me a headache everytime I took it to the range. Love the caliber. 0 -
I had One in 7mm/08, super accurate. hard to hold on to with 150 gr loads though. Ive been shooting a Mdl 70 6.5x55 ever since they came out, and really like the caliber, the same as your .260
