Converting savage .30-06 to 300 mag

A guy told me the other day you can convert the .30-06 savage to a 300 win mag with no machining. All I would have to do is change the barrel and a part of my bolt. Is this possible??? If so where do I get the parts?

  Not Likely...You have to Head Space the Bolt to the Chamber...This requires machining...Why...would you want to go to another caliber, when the venerable 30-06 will do anything you want..?

  I don't beleive the 06 bolt face will work on a belted magnum case either. You are looking at probably close to $150-$200 for gunsmithing plus the barrel. Now, if you just get the chamber cut to 30-06 ackley improved, you will have to handload, but you will have the 300mag performance.

  These Savages (112 series for example) are different. The bolt head is replacable(you use your own bolt body), the magazine assembly is replaced, and of course the barrel. This "requires" headspace guages. When it headspaces correctly you lock the barrel nut. I've seen switch barrel guns made with these units were they can be changed in minutes. Not as fast as a Blaser rifle but look at the price difference. Parts were available at Numrich. For this, get more input and always use a competent gunsmith. These Savages are not like Win 70's, Rem 700's, or Mauser 98's.

  To support what CaptKirk is saying, if I'm not mistaken, some of the high energy or light magnum loads out there for the 30.06 do take the velocities to within 100 to 150 fps of the 300 magnum, so yes, why bother with the conversion?

  He may be referring to an article in the Dec. issue of Guns & Ammo magazine, about changing calibers of the Savage 110 (and variations). MidwayUSA has come up with barrel, bolt head parts, magazine boxes, etc. for changing calibers of a 110.
  Get a copy of the magazine, good article. Then decide it you want to tackle the job yourself (buy the tools, etc.), or buy the parts and get a gunsmith to fit them. The article did mention changing a 30'06 to .300 WSM, not Win. Magnum.

  I don't know about converting the Savage but after WW11 Norma made chamber reamers to change 03-A3 rifles into their .308 Norma Mag Caliber. After rechambering the barrel, the bolt face had to be opened up for the case head which is the same as the .300 Win Mag. The gunsmiths also had to open up the feed ramps to allow the cartridge to feed from the magazine. I have a .308 Norma Mag rifle that was converted from a 1909 Mauser rifle with a new barrel and the other modifications and it is an excellent gun. The .308 Norma Mag, .300 Win Mag, and the 30-338 are all pretty close to the same ballistics and the cases are all close to the same except for approx a 1/10" difference in case lengths or in length from base to shoulder. All are belted Mag cases.

  I have recently read an article that Savage is offering components to convert allowing more than one caliber per gun assembly. Contact your Savage rep. or Savage homesite.
