is +P+ ammo safe in my gun?
i have a s&w model 10 .38 special, 4 inch barrell. the gun will handle +P ammo, but i was wondering about +P+ ammo. i currently use winchester sxt +P 130 grain jhp for defense. i have seen 158 grain, +P+ jhp.
i was wondering if the increase in the weight of the slug from 130 grains to 158 grains would be offset by the difference between +p velocity and +P+ velocity, resulting in a heavier slug(158 gr.) moving at the same speed as the lighter slug(130 gr.)
if i am right, then is it reasonable to think that a heavier slug moving at the velocity of a lighter slug would transfer more energy and possibly expand more due to more weight, thus causing more damage to an attacker?
i am aware that a well placed shot is very important, but in a defense situation, i want all the advantage i can get.

Best advantage, buy a 45. The Mod 10 is a sturdy gun, but I would be hesitant to feed too much hot ammo into it. There are a lot of theories about what ammo works best in the 38, but basically they are all marginal manstoppers and the most important thing is going to be your ability to hit the target, possibly several times. Hence you don't want something that is going have excessive recoil to negatively affect your ability to fire additional shots quickly. Get something you are comfortable with and practice. PS. If you can hit em in the head, any ammo will be a good manstopper.[:D] Just my .02 0 -

tenniso, check out RBCD ammo . . . they have a web site. The ammo is very pricey, but the results are startling. If you're going to use a .38 for a defensive firearm, I would advise you consider this loading, which is not +P. 0 -
+P is one thing but when you get into +p+ you are beating the hell out of a gun, so why not buy a magnum? 0 -
I don't know if I would run +p+ through a S&W Model 10. I would look for another gun that could handle the pressures more easily like a .357 magnum. As far as velocity is concerned you don't want to overpenetrate your target in a defensive situation, you are responsible for where that bullet lands if it punches a hole clean through your attacker and hits somebody else or their property. 0 -

Not true, but it "sounds good." If you shoot crook A and bullet goes thru and hits PA storekeeper, and Crook A had a friend helping him in most areas CROOK B is charged with murder from YOUR bullet.
Also you had NO INTENT to harm another thus NO crime. You read that in gun rags and it is yet another "sounds good" logic. If you want to worry about bullets worry about the 90+% that MISS and never touch the intended target. In a 9mm you have a 1600+ yard distance to worry about that slug hitting something it shouldn't. Again, you wouldn't have a legal issue since there was NO INTENT to do a third party harm. Most you might have a concern with is neglegent bavior based on what you knewe at the time you fired or SHOULD have known.
That would be more civil than criminal.
Also head shots are all but impossible in REAL life and even if you pull it off they aren't 100% by any stretch of the imagination. But again, " it sounds good."0 -
There's no reason why you can't shoot +P+, you just DON'T want to do more than test and carry it. It's really a duty load and not for practice especially in a gun that's not up to heavy use--I could see using it in 357 magnum without any issue. If you can shoot straight with it, you're fine, just use +P or standard veolocity for practice.

In any state you may not be charged by the district attourney but you might face a civil action from the family of the deceased if your bullet "unintentionally" strikes them even after it passes through your intended target. You could get sued for wrongful death. Better safe than sorry no matter what state you live in.
And I don't recall saying anything about trying for a head shot.0 -

hate to break your heart but civil suits against civilians in self-defense shootings are very very very rare. We don't have enough money. In most states your homeowners and in some business insurance won't cover it because it was an intentional act and not negligence.
Also you can simply file bankruptcy as Barnhard Goetz did. The key is NOT "unintentionally"..but if you were NEGLIGENT. A bullet going thru someone is NOT negligence, but it sounds good. Are you worrying mroe about being sued or LIVING. You can't come back from the dead.
Wherever you are from the laws are pretty similar if you check. Beats embracing the "sounds good" logic. Best to embrace the LAW. If the bullet exits someone and hurts someone else there is NO INTENT no your part to do that. No INTENT, no crime. Find a case that says otherwise with a name on it. Take a lunch it will be an all day job.0
