SKS Problem
I purchased a 20 round fixed magazine for the Russian SKS and I had lots of trouble with feeding. After looking the magazine over I found the pin was loose and repeended it and it cycled ok. I took it to the range today and I had some stove pipes and some double feeds. Anyone got any ideas were I may adjust this magazine to take care of this problem.
I was using the old steel core ammo and a friend gave some new wolf ammo to try in the rifle same result, one or two jams or double feed per twenty rounds. The rifle had only about 50 round through it prior to this firing.

Have a Yugo SKS that won't cycle. At first it was firing a shot and then stovepiping. I cleaned it real good and now it just fires one shot at a time, no noticeable bolt movement at all.
I believe the gas valve is in the correct position (down) as this allows the gas into the gas tube, thereby causing the action to cycle. I admit I didn't try it with the valve in the up position, but it appears that would block the gas escape hole. I cleaned it well before firing it.
Also, it's very difficult pulling the bolt back by hand after firing.0 -
The Yugo has the gas valve to stop the action when lauching grenades. Change the position of the valve opposite of what it is now. 0 -
When those Yugo SKSs first came into the country we ordered a pair for our shop to see how thay would sell having the grenade launcher on the end. Both were a cosmleen ( sorrry about the spelling) night mare but when we finally got them both cleaned, one shot perfectly but the other had the same problem that you described so we checked the valve to see if it was set for grenade or not and it wasn't. To make a long story short we found out that several of those first Yugo SKS had bad gas tubes. Check the valve as the other person stated first and if that doesn't work, clean the tube & plunger. If all that fails maybe bad gas tube. We sent the one we had back to distributer but have sold many more since then and that was the only one that we had cycleing problems with. 0 -

I have one of these rifles also. I had the same problem and although I haven't fixed it a hundred percent, I have found some of the problems. The first thing was that these rifles were packed with grease. I had to clean mine for hours before getting that 55 year old out crap out of my rifle. The second thing was that I had taken out the factory mag and put in a twenty rounder. This is what caused most of my jamming problems. I went back to a factory five round mag and most of the problems went away. I own several sks's and all have jamming problems. Most of it derives from using cheap amo that results in high deposits of carbon or burnt powder in the gas tube. Keep your weapon clean and it should shoot well for you. The other trick I found is using a non oil based lubricant. Remington makes it and it cuts down on the amount of burnt powder that stays in the weapon. 0 -
A lot of SKS cycling problems stem from an obstructed gas port, pull the tool kit out of the buttstock and get the reamer out of it. Use the reamer to cut the fouling out of the port. Also, check the fit of the piston in the gas tube. If either is excessively worn, you will get too much blowby and the rifle won't fully cycle. HTH
