Recoil from 50 cal bold gun
I had thought about getting a 50 cal bolt rifle but after living with my 338 / 378 (up to 84 ft lbs recoil) I decided that perhaps thats not what I wanted. This month in gun tests magazine, they said that a 24 lb 50 cal recoils like a 30-06! First is that possible? 06's recoil is under 25 lbs. If it is true, Im going to get one tomorrow!~

Second time I've said this, but your 338/378 in no way has 84 foot pounds of recoil. I will let you know how bad the 50 BMG recoils when I get my AMAC. It weighs 36 pounds and is not supposed to recoil anymore than the 12 gauge 3".

You're comparing apples and oranges here. Without those huge and effective muzzle brakes, the 50BMG would take your shoulder off. 0 -
There's a lot of difference in those figures of ft.lbs of recoil and the actual damage recoil does to your shoulder. Those 50's create a blast. I've blown ammo boxes off tables on each side, set off car alarms in the parking lot at a range, shoved one shooter off the seat when it went off before he was ready, but they aren't as painful as some other "big" rifles. My Ruger 77 .458 feels like you're hit in the shoulder with a 4 lb. hammer. The Marlin 1895ss 45-70 hurts bad with a 400 grain at 2150 fps. The Siamese 45-70 at 2340- uncomfortable for some. My .510 Wells, a .460 Weatherby necked up to .50 shoots a 600 gr. at 2456 fps. and we'll shoot 100 rounds of it some days,- comfortably.
Those comparisons of the 50 BMG and a 30-06 and 12 ga. 3 incher are just not valid. I've used at least 10 different brakes and they tame it down somewhat, and you know you're shooting something BIG, but it's a different kind of hurt. I make brakes, have had 15 year-old kids shoot my 28 pounder with the best one and let off 15 or 20 rounds before stopping for a rest.
I rate recoil by the different shades of purple you get on the shoulder after a day's shoot.
I know that brakes are necessary on the 50's, but we were shooting one of the early AMAC'S with the first model brake. It fell off in the dirt and 2 guys each took a shot without noticing it. We noticed that it sounded different, but they claimed it didn't feel any different???0 -

Yes, it is possible. I own a Maadi/Griffin and two Barret M-82A1's. The recoil is, shall we say, bearable, somethig like a 3" mag,only it seems to push further. But, this is only possible because of the BIG HONKIN brake/compensators they are equipt with and thier wieght. These rifle are HEAVY.Remember this is a BIG, HONKIN round. With out these highly effective brakes, the .50 BMG round would not be possible in a shoulder fired rifle. Recall the M-2, Even on it's mount, it was like a jack hammer. After a belt or two, you kinda went numb from the shoulders to the hand.0 -

125 gr powder, 9 pound gun 300 gr bullet. at 2800 fps its 75 pounds recoil. I got the 84 pound number from the guy that built the loads. He says they are faster still than the 2800 out of a 32 inch barrel. At 3000 fps it calculates it at 87 ft pounds0 -

The Barrett video shows the bolt Barrett being shot from the bench. As I recall, there is even a shot of the gun being shot with no one behind it. It hardly moves. (I may be recalling the M82A1 as the one fired with no one behind it. Not sure.) Apparently, it is the weight and brakes that make these bearable. Having shot my .300 Weatherby Colt Sauer with 220-grain bullets (to me, that combination far exceeds my comfort level - VERY "sharp" recoil), I think the recoil of these .50BMG rifles must be less or people could not take it. I got an AramLite AR-50 for a friend more than two years ago, but he has yet to shoot it! Someday, I hope to try it to see how it feels.

The focus on "recoil energy" ignores one of the key factors in felt recoil. Pay more attention to recoil VELOCITY and you will get a better idea of what the recoil actually FEELS like.

I've been shooting for over fifty years and have never understood the joy of being hammered with heavy recoil. Please explain what I'm missing. 0 -

There's joy in hitting a grapefruit at 5/8 of a mile, or seeing a 250 lb. wild boar being vaporized with my swaged jacketed hunting bullet, like GHD does to groundhogs. There's recoil involved, but the joy is there. -
