Springfield model 1898 front sight advise
My friend has a Springfield model 1898 30/40Krag in 95%, we headspaced it and started shooting. It took me a while to figure out why it was shooting a foot high at 100 yards with the rear sight set as low as it will go then it accured to me that when they designed the rear sight they were sitting a .308 200+gr on top of 40gr of black powder and marked the sight elevation adjustments 1-6 then flip it up and slide for 7-14 (or something close to that)and the trajectory was alot lower than the modern Winchester X 180gr smokless we were now putting threw it.
The front blade sight is 1/16" and pinned in I guess I'll make one about 1/4" taller and pin it in the original ones place unless you guy's have any other bright idias or doohickeys as you are so well known for having knowlage of.

I have several comments on your post. 1.The cartridges for the Krag rifle were never loaded with black powder. The "40" in .30-40 stood for 40 grains of smokeless powder. 2. The bullet was a 220 grain round nose bullet of .308 inch diameter driven at 2200 fps from the 31 inch barrel. 3.The height of the front sight blade on the model 1898 rifle is .413 inch. You are correct, the front sight blade is pinned in place with the ends of the pin peened over and must be drilled out. If your rifle is all original, keep the original front sight blade so that you can put it back if you ever want to sell the rifle. These rifles always shoot high because in action you were taught to use the "belt buckle" hold in order to strike the torso. That way you had a chance to hit the enemy somewhere at an unknown range. If you reload one of the best loads for the .30-40 Krag is 43 grains of IMR-4350 a 220 grain Serria round nose bullet and CCI primers all loaded to an overall length of 3.122 inches. 0 -
