which .243 is for me??
looking at .243 as a varminter for me and whitetail caliber for my daughter. often I see 1 in 9" twist rates. I'm worried it might be too fast for lighter bullets used in varminting. If I wanted to shoot 55 gr. factory loads at coyote and 100 gr. loads for deer (all factory loads) would 1 in 9" be ok. (by the way .243 is plenty for the whitetails in my area) I'm just asking for any experience getting good (hunting)accuracy from both 55 gr. and 100 gr .243's in the same barrel. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Also I'm taking suggestions for make and model... I want a light weight weapon and I don't have much to spend. I know it won't fit both of us perfectly, but we can't afford two rifles.

i am shooting 55gr nos bal tips at 3890fps with 10" twist 24"bbl working all right but have not put them on paper yet but shooting at a 30gal drum at 450 yds they looked like about 3" group....iam planing on doing a 243 ackley imp might use a slower twist for that not sure how slow yet 0 -
The only problem is going to be in the two different bullets shooting different. the barral shouls hold both and do just fine but because of the different grain weights they will shoot some different. I would not shoot one and the the other wil shoot the same you will have to shoot both and see how they do in your gun. As to a gun i also dont have a lot to spend but i am looking at a Howa. They are well made and shoot good. Look at my other post on here

Hi, I bought my wife a Ruger RSI(mannlicher style) in 243. This is a nice gun for a smaller person. My wife is only 5 foot tall, the length and weight work out great. 0 -
I have a Remington 700 in 243 and with factory 80 or 100 gr. bullets it groups well but with the 55 gr. it wont put 2 anywhere near each other. 0 -
Started my daughter at age 7 with a Rem 700 .243W. She loaded her own ammo. Used the 70gr HPBT bullet for everything - varmints up to 50+ shots per day - and Mule and Whitetail deer. That doesn't make the 70gr a deer bullet - but was pleasant to shoot at varmints and come serious season she knew where it would go and what it would do.
Always figured to move her up to 100 to 105 gr for deer when she got her growth. But she just kept killing deer - two every year (sometimes 3) for 10 years - every one with one shot - and never did get her growth - Now she's pushin 40 and still isn't five feet tall. Just gave up I guess. Anyway, she quit hunting when she realized her success was intimidating potential boyfriends or frankly just making them look bad. By the way, that is a nine twist and grouped the 70s around .6 inch and I later used it with 105s (Speer) around 1 inch and the 95 Low Drags around .6 inch

My ruger 77 mk2 in 243 will shoot 58's and 100's less than 1", but not 70's or 87's. with the mid weight bullets I am luck to get 3". The 788 rem in 243 will shoot them all at about 1.25".

James, I set up a 243 for a youngster this past year and had loaded up some 70Grain Nosler BT for it using 40 grains of Varget. It was a pleasant load for a young kid (9) and was accurate. He also has shot 3 deer, all 1 shot kills using the same loads! As someone else said, I'm not saying the 70's are super deer bullets but they worked well for this young man. The 70's are a good varmint bullet, that's understood so maybe you could try one bullet, one gun, two objectives. GHD 0 -
Just thought I'd add my two cents in this,if money or shortness of it is a problem,I'd suggest a NEF or Rossi single shot.They are inexpensive and shoot rather well.Thanks for listenin',Bob. 0 -
Like the other follows are saying it depends on the gun, my rem 788 works the best with 80 and 85 gr. Have put down both dog and deer at long ranges 250 yards +. Good luck, you will have to try differant loads
